Roseate Morning on Old Tampa Bay

Roseate Morning
Two roseate spoonbills and a white ibis search the shallow waters of Old Tampa Bay for an early morning meal, catching a glow from the rising sun. Flocks of both species frequently fly single file or in formation along the shore early in the morning and at dusk, on their way to and from favorite roosting areas such as on Alligator Lake.

The bay is the northernmost range for the roseate spoonbill, but the white ibis is common throughout Florida. Neither bird species is considered threatened today, although roseate spoonbills were nearly decimated during the plume-hunting era of the late 1800s when John James Audubon was chronicling the birds of North America.
