Safety Harbor Garden Club Selects Garden Of The Month

Marlene Kelley, left, co-president of the Safety Harbor Garden Club, presents a sign to Patty Burke designating her home as Safety Harbor’s “Garden of the Month.” Patty and Larry Burke own the property at 1407 N. Bay Shore Dr., overlooking Old Tampa Bay. Beautifully designed and lovingly maintained with many gorgeous native tropical plants, the garden includes Lobster Claw Heliconia, Yellow Mandevilla, several varieties of ginger, crotons and bananas.

This is to be the first in a series of Safety Harbor Gardens of the Month designated by the club, which meets at 9:30 a.m. on the third Wednesday each month at the Safety Harbor Library. For more information, call 727-726-3794.

Mars Won't Be As Big E-mail

Mars Won’t Be As Big And Bright As The Full Moon

Anyone who has an email account probably has received an alert that “Mars will be extremely close to Earth on August 27.” Some versions of this bogus message assert that the two planets will not be in such close proximity again during the lifetime of any living person. Furthermore, Mars “will appear as big and bright as the full moon.”

Sorry, it happened three years ago. But even on August 27, 2003 — when Mars really was at its closest approach in recorded history — a 75-power telescope was required to make the Red Planet appear nearly as large as the moon, which was photographed above on July 9 as clouds scudded across a nearly full moon. In fact, on this August 27, NASA reports Mars will not be visible at all. A slender new moon will glow near Spica, the brightest star of the constellation Virgo.

The next time Mars approaches as closely as it did in 2003 will not occur until the year 2287. Meanwhile, enjoy the moon.

Tradewinds Island Resorts Receive Green Certification E-mail
Tuesday, 01 August 2006
The TradeWinds Island Resorts — the Island Grand Resort and the Sandpiper Hotel & Suites — located along the Gulf of Mexico on the island of St. Pete Beach, were recently awarded the Green Lodging Certification from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in recognition of efforts in conserving natural resources.

The voluntary, non-regulatory Florida Green Lodging Program works with the lodging industry to reduce waste and minimize pollution. TradeWinds green initiatives include an extensive paper, cardboard and aluminum recycling program that involves guests and participation in the Water CHAMPs program through the Southwest Florida Water Management District. The resort also uses energy-efficient appliances that are Energy Star-rated, and high-efficiency air filters with an aggressive program to improve indoor air quality. A towel and linen reuse program is also utilized through housekeeping.

As a reward for designation, Florida is recommending “green” properties to companies seeking environmentally-conscious lodging and convention facilities

Both TradeWinds Resorts – the 585-room Island Grand and the 159-room Sandpiper – also recently announced that all guest rooms are now completely non-smoking. The TradeWinds Sandpiper re-opened earlier this year after an $11 million renovation which included a total renovation of all guest rooms and suites, and redesigned courtyards, pool decks and lobby area. The Sandpiper has also introduced Romance Rooms, boasting oversized hotel space, king-sized beds, and whirlpool tubs overlooking the Gulf and beachfront pool and the Oasis Courtyard with a heated pool and whirlpool reserved for adults.
