The Florida Orchestra, Master Chorale Join In Concerts
By Henry Adams
Special to Tropical Breeze
Hailed by the American Record Guide as “the best orchestra in the Southeast,” The Florida Orchestra, under the direction of Music Director Stefan Sanderling, offers a variety of Masterworks, Super Pops and morning Coffee Concerts in November and December with performances in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater.
If you enjoy choral music, treat yourself to fantastic concerts in December with The Florida Orchestra and The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay: “A Christmas Spectacular” of traditional carols and popular holiday tunes, along with Nanette Fabray’s narration of “The Night Before Christmas” on December 1, 2 and 3; and Beethoven’s immortal Symphony No. 9 on December 15, 16 and 18.
For fans of Broadway show tunes, the orchestra’s Grammy Award-winning Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman takes the podium for “A Rodgers & Hammerstein Celebration” with music from “South Pacific,” “Oklahoma!,” “Sound of Music,” “The King & I” and more on November 10, 11 and 12.
British conductor Kenneth Montgomery returns to The Florida Orchestra to conduct Dvorak’s highly energetic Symphony No. 5 with its rich kaleidoscope of symphonic colors and Bohemian melodies. This program also features Principal Violist Ben Markwell performing a marvellous Brahms sonata orchestrated by Samuel Adler, all on November 17, 18 and 19.
The Florida Orchestra’s next morning Coffee Concert, “Tis the Season,” features a program of winter-themed music by Tchaikovsky, Glazunov and Rimsksy Korsakov, along with cellist Caroline Bean performing Schumann’s Cello Concerto, all with complimentary coffee and donuts. Associate Conductor Susan Haig conducts this concert at the Mahaffey Theater at the Progess Energy Center for the Arts in St. Petersburg on Thursday, December 7, at 11 a.m.
The orchestra regularly performs its Masterworks and Super Pops concerts at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in Tampa; Mahaffey Theater at the Progress Energy Center for the Arts in St. Petersburg; and Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater.
Single tickets are on sale online at www.floridaorchestra.org or at 813-286-2403 or 1-800-662-7286, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mon.-Fri.
