St. Petersburg Sets July 31 Deadline For $50,000 Public Art Project E-mail
Saturday, 01 July 2006

The St. Petersburg Public Arts Commission announces an opportunity for artists to apply to create a public art project at the new Roberts Community Center, 1246 50th Ave. N.

An exterior art project is sought for the new community center — unique because it will serve both youth and adults. Construction on the new 27,000 s.f. community center is scheduled to begin in August with completion in mid-2007.

The art would be located at a covered walkway that connects the drop-off location in the parking lot to the main entrance. The artist may address either wall, sidewalk, planter, or any combination of these elements. A $50,000 budget is allocated.

Artists interested in applying should read the detailed prospectus and drawings at www.stpete.org/publicart.htm. Qualified artists must meet eligibility requirements described in the prospectus and submit an application package that includes either digital or slide images of previously completed work. The postmarked deadline is Monday, July 31.

Saturday, 01 July 2006
American Stage Theatre Company recently was awarded a grant from the Eckerd Family Foundation in support of the American Stage Education program, Artists-in-Residence at the Pinellas County Juvenile Detention Center. The program includes a partnership with Youth Arts Corps, a division of Family Resources.

The Artists-in-Residence program will place American Stage Teaching Artists into the Detention Center to work with incarcerated girls. Using the craft of the theatre, curriculum will focus on character building, making healthy choices, defining positive relationships, problem solving, strategies for success and personal empowerment. Through free writing, creative dramatics and role playing, the girls will learn to express their feelings in a positive fashion, define and implement a successful goal system and expand their world view.

Research shows that arts education raises overall academic performance and builds skills necessary for workplace success while decreasing and preventing negative behavior.

Arts education nurtures a child’s development by strengthening academic performance and communication, teaching cooperation and team-building skills, fostering an appreciation for cultural and ethnic diversity, teaching creative problem-solving skills, building self-esteem and self-discipline, encouraging the ability to imagine and articulate thoughts, teaching responsibility to complete tasks from start to finish, increasing literacy skills, and deterring delinquent behavior and truancy problems.

Contact Julie Rowe, director of education, American Stage Theatre Company at 727-823-1600, ext. 201 or email julierowe@americanstage.org for more information.
