‘The Mountaineer,’ a painting measuring only 2"x3" by Rachelle Siegrist, was judged Best of Show for the 2008 event.

The Miniature Art Society of Florida opens its annual exhibit at the Gulf Coast Museum of Art, Largo, from Jan. 20 to Feb. 10. It once again will feature miniature paintings, scrimshaw, fired porcelain and sculpture created by some of the world’s finest miniature artists. With few exceptions, all of the art is for sale.

Approximately 850 works of art will be shown, in addition to the Miniature Art Society of Florida’s permanent collection of more than 100 miniatures. The artwork is well lighted and magnifying glasses are available for the enjoyment of even the smallest treasures.

Most of the artists create under magnification, using a variety of mediums and methods and the tiniest of brushes for paintings.

Entries from 35 states and 12 countries provide a diversity of subject matter and framing techniques. Of approximately 1,100 works of art submitted for the show, a jury of award-winning miniaturists has selected only the very finest.

Beginning Tues., Jan. 22 through the end of the show, visitors may talk to and observe artists at work. Techniques to be demonstrated include oil painting, scrimshaw, pencil drawing and fired porcelain.

Highwaymen Art Collection Began At Safety Harbor Museum; Now Returns For First Public Exhibition E-mail

This painting by Robert L. Lewis, one of the original Highwaymen, is among those featured in the exhibition currently at the Safety Harbor Museum of Regional History. It was among more than  40 paintings collected in a five-month period by the late Channing Delaplane.

by Floyd Egner Publisher, Tropical Breeze

An East Lake resident’s move to Costa Rica has given the Safety Harbor Museum of Regional History the opportunity to feature a unique collection of more than 40 Florida Highwaymen paintings never before publicly displayed.

Ruth Delaplane said the collection was acquired in a relatively short time during the last months of her late husband Channing’s life.

“It was a spontaneous event, a happy passion inspired by Channing’s affection for Bean Backus and Jim Fitch’s documentary,” Channing wrote in an email to the museum in October. The documentary, “Highwaymen: Florida’s Outsider Artists,” was released in 2000. Fitch wrote several magazine articles in the 1990s about the native Florida African-American artists and gave them the name “Highwaymen” because they often sold paintings from the trunks of cars parked along Florida roads in the late 1950s and 1960s.

Estimates vary, but tens of thousands of quickly produced paintings were sold over a 40 year period by a core group of about 25 artists and their descendants. Most originally were sold for less than $50, often for only $10 or $20, but began to routinely sell for thousands of dollars as they were discovered in the 1990s. Newspaper and magazine articles, books and video documentaries propelled the art into the public consciousness. Although produced quickly and inexpensively, the landscape art captures an Old Florida that rapidly is disappearing.

The Safety Harbor Museum is hosting an exhibition of Highwaymen paintings for the ninth consecutive year. Surviving members of the original group of artists and descendants will be at the museum for demonstrations and to meet the public periodically throughout the show, which runs through March 31. Delaplane’s collection is on indefinite loan to the museum and is the centerpiece of this year’s exhibit.

“Restricted by illness and often in great pain, Channing’s intense interest in the work of the Highwaymen, shared by the whole family, livened the last months of  his life and brought him much joy,” Delaplane wrote to the museum. “He selected the first canvas, Robert Lewis’ North Florida Autumn, at the Safety Harbor museum exhibit in February, 2003; his final choice, a Roy McLendon, Jr. commission, arrived three days after his death on July 1, 2003.

A Highwaymen painting of a Florida orange grove such as this one, left, by W. C. “Willie” Reagan from the Delaplane Collection carries a special poignancy with the knowledge that many of the Highwaymen artists used their talent to help escape from lives as laborers in Florida’s groves and fields.

“In less than five months more than forty paintings, each loving selected, filled our walls. They were purchased from the artists at exhibits and at their studios, from art galleries, from personal collections and from E-Bay.“

Delaplane also explained that the five-month burst of collecting was not simply a passing whim. Her husband’s connections to the Highwaymen artists go back to their origins in the Fort Pierce area during the 1950s. The artist who is considered the “first” Highwayman is Alfred Hair, who was a student of artist A.E. “Bean” Backus. Hair shared his knowledge and techniques with a small group who were primarily workers in the fields and groves around Fort Pierce.

“Channing entered the citrus business and settled in Fort Pierce after World War II,” Delaplane explained. “He and Bean soon formed an enduring friendship. In 1955 he (Channing) married “Cookie,” a talented portrait artist, encouraging her to study landscapes with Bean. The marriage, unlike the friendship, did not endure and in 1964 he moved to Winter Haven to take a position with General Foods. In 1967 we met and married, spending our honeymoon in Jamaica at Bean’s Port Antonio cottage.

“In 1970 we asked Bean to paint two canvases. We kept one and my sister and her husband purchased the other.”Delaplane selected the Safety Harbor Museum as repository for the collection to share the creativity of the Highwaymen with the public and help preserve their vision of a rapidly disappearing Florida.

The museum is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tues.-Fri.; 11-4 p.m. Sat. and Sun. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and teens, and children under 7 are admitted free. It is located at 329 Bayshore Blvd. S., Safety Harbor. Call 727-726-1668.
