Bloom N Garden N Chalk Fest
In Safety Harbor March 28 and 29
Calling all artists! Artists who work in all types of media are invited to try their hands at Sidewalk Art during the first annual Bloom N Garden N Chalk Fest in Safety Harbor. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, and from 10 to 4 on Sunday, March 29 with a variety of valuable prizes to be awarded during a ceremony at the Safety Harbor Gazebo at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Local families are also welcome to pre-register and join the fun during the festival. There are no fees for participation, and chalk will be provided to all of the registered artists without charge. There will also be a Kids Chalk Garden to allow kids to be creative.
Lee Jones, president of the Florida Chalk Artists Association, will be joined by some other Florida Chalk Artists in creating amazing chalk art during the festival. Jones, who has participated in Chalk Art Festivals across the nation, will also be in Safety Harbor on Saturday, March 14, from 10 to 1 at the Rigsby Center in Safety Harbor to present a free clinic for interested participants who want to know more about techniques involved in sidewalk art as they plan their projects for the upcoming event.
A reception for artists and sponsors will be held at Syd Entel Galleries on Friday, March 27 from 6-9 pm to kick off the opening of the event. As a special incentive to participating artists, Syd Entel Galleries has agreed to provide exhibit space for a limited number of works to be sold and promoted by each participating professional artist during the Festival.
Participants also will be treated to a continental breakfast each morning of the festival as well as free refreshments during the day. In addition to a number of prizes, three art school scholarships will be awarded during the event. The scholarships are to Full Sail University, Ringling School of Art and Design and the University of South Florida School of Art and History.
Local artists Zoran Peshich and Stacy Roth of Harbour Arts were first among Safety Harbor artists to sign up to participate. This event features a number of award categories. Event sponsors will present a number of unique awards to participants. The sponsors will judge these special competitions.

SPRING ART CAMP - New Program!
Monday - Thursday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
The Tampa Museum of Art offers a Spring Art Camp, April 6 - 9, for children 6 - 10. The camp will be held for four days, each with half and full-day options. Certified Hillsborough County art instructors teach all classes. Children will have the opportunity to explore art, media and techniques, expand their creative boundaries and learn new skills. SUMMER ART CAMP - Registration Open!

The Tampa Museum of Art presents the popular Summer Art Camp, June 22 - July 31, for kids 6 - 14. Campers explore a variety of styles and movements in art and participate in exciting hands-on art making experiences including clay, sculpture, painting, drawing and decorative arts. Summer Art Camp projects are based on learning the method and media of making art in the creative environment of the Tampa Museum of Art. Children gain an appreciation and understanding of art, as well as the ability to develop their individual talent for self-expression. Certified Hillsborough County art instructors teach all classes. START WITH THE ARTS PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAM - Thursday, 10 - 10:45 a.m.
In conjunction with the VSA arts Early Childhood Education Program, the museum presents Start with the Arts. The unique curriculum provides an art-based learning approach to literacy and includes activities in visual arts, creative drama, dance, movement and music. Program is geared for 3 - 5 year-old children accompanied by a parent/guardian. The fee is $4 per adult and child, and $2 for each additional child, and includes all class supplies. May 21 / Students create a picture that combines art, décor and recycling.
May 28 / Children combine chemistry and art to create op-art to wear or share.

Free drop-in program
This Saturday morning free drop-in program offers children the opportunity to explore their own creativity by visiting the galleries and creating art projects in the museum's classroom. Projects are self-guided and offer a different art activity each week. No registration required. The Art Spot is a Target Art sponsored program.

Free for high school students
Junior Docent meetings are held the second and fourth Thursday of each month and offered free of charge. High school students meet new friends while learning about art and culture. The Junior Docent program at TMA provides an exciting experience for teenagers as they explore history and culture through art.

CLUB ART FOR TEENS! - Wednesday, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Program held at Jefferson High School unless otherwise noted.Club Art is offered free-of-charge and scheduled on select Wednesday afternoons during the school year. Club Art offers teens the chance to meet and work with art professionals, learn about careers in the arts and experiment with a wide-range of media and techniques. Activities include guest lectures, workshops, behind-the-scenes visits to museums and galleries, and the opportunity to create art in a studio environment. A variety of snacks and refreshments are provided.

Join retired professional caterer Toni Haynes for a six-week series of cooking demonstrations where she shares her secrets of the trade. Participants learn how to prepare a romantic dinner for two or a feast for a multi-family reunion, enjoy generous samples of the dishes she prepares, and receive printed copies of the recipes used in class. IMAGES OF MEXICO: A CULTURAL HISTORY - Friday, 1:30 - 3:15 p.m.
Registration Fee: $40 / Held at TMA
Instructor Sally Matthews will acquaint participants with Mexican images and history during this six-week class. The course explores universal images found in Mexican heritage and look at the influence of such women as Doña Marina (Cortez's interpreter), Madame Calderon de la Barca, and Frida Kahlo. Presentations will touch upon various eras of history, including the pre-Conquest, Conquest, era of the Viceroys, and the shaky march toward democracy. Students learn about the town of San Miguel de Allende, recently designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Class art activities include making and firing a clay tile, making silver-clay milagros, and creating a ‘nicho,' a tin and glass box that holds personal miniature images. VSA ARTS OF FLORIDA FESTIVAL: ART IN MOTION - Thursday, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
The Tampa Museum of Art presents the third annual VSA arts of Florida Festival at its interim location in West Tampa. This year's theme, Art in Motion, emphasizes dance, music, and the visual arts. Students from six Hillsborough County schools will explore museum galleries, participate in performances by wheelchair and flamenco dancers, engage in demonstrations by community artists, and create art work of their own that ‘moves' through kinetic sculpture, wheelchair chalk drawings, straw paintings, and mobiles. Program partners include VSA arts of Florida, Hillsborough County School District, The Arts Council of Hillsborough County, TMA's Friends of the Arts, The Steinbrenner Foundation, and other community organizations.

EARTH DAY AT NATURE'S CLASSROOM - Saturday & Sunday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Join TMA at this weekend festival that celebrates nature and Hillsborough County's environment. Nature's Classroom is a 356-acre environmental studies program and learning laboratory set in Florida's natural environment. Since 1969 more than 328,000 sixth grade students from Hillsborough County public schools have experienced Nature's Classroom, located in Thonotosassa, FL. TMA provides a variety of hands-on activities.

ABOUT THE TAMPA MUSEUM OF ART
The new Tampa Museum of Art is under construction in downtown Tampa's Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. Its spectacular 66,000-square-foot Cornelia Corbett Center building is scheduled to open in late 2009. JUNIOR LEAGUE OF CLEARWATER-DUNEDIN
ANNOUNCES MOONLIGHT IN MONTE CARLO FUNDRAISER
The Junior League of Clearwater-Dunedin (JLCD) is proud to present Moonlight in Monte Carlo on Saturday, April 25, 2009 from 7–11 pm. This elegant casino night fundraiser will be held at the Harborview Center in downtown Clearwater and will feature delectable fare from local restaurants, gaming tables, live entertainment, and dancing. Reservations can be made now, and proceeds support the loc al community through the Junior League’s efforts.
In 1972 the Dunedin Service League hosted Monte Carlo Night to benefit their new signature project, the Dunedin Fine Arts Center, and today’s League is proud to put a new spin on an old tradition by offering our own Moonlight in Monte Carlo. Tuxedoed dealers will transport attendees to a French Riviera-style casino, featuring Black Jack, Roulette, Craps, and Texas Hold ‘Em. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Don Juceam Orchestra - a ten-piece band, led by Frank Sinatra impersonator Don Juceam. Food selections from Tampa Bay’s finest restaurants will be plentiful, including dishes from E&E Stakeout Grill, Guppy’s on the Beach, Mystic Fish Seafood Grill & Bar, Tuscon’s Grill & Cantina, Bellini Restaurant & Lounge, Island Way Grill, Rumba Island Bar & Grill, Salt Rock Grill, and Marlin Darlin’.
The evening will also include a Chocolate Extravaganza featuring chocolate dessert creations presented by our participating restaurants. Each creation will be judged based on originality, creativity, presentation, and taste. The League is honored to have notable community leaders acting as judges for this portion of the event. Margaret Word Burnside and Aaron Fodiman, Dawn Cooper and Gwen Hoover, The Honorable Robert N. Hackworth and Gwynne Hackworth, the Honorable Frank Hibbard and Teresa Hibbard, and Mary K. and John Wilson will judge the Chocolate Extravaganza prior to the event beginning. Attendees will be able to view the winners and sample all of the chocolate creations.
Proceeds raised from this event will fund the JLCD signature community project, ANGELS. ANGELS is an acronym for Alliance to Nurture, Grow, and Enhance Life Skills for Foster Families in North Pinellas and Pasco Counties. Hailed as “Verdi’s
greatest opera” and “one of the most ambitious and lavish sacred
works in the entire orchestral repertoire,” Music Director Stefan
Sanderling and The Florida Orchestra (TFO) are joined by The Master Chorale of
Tampa Bay to perform Verdi’s Requiem.
The featured vocal soloists include soprano Indra Thomas, mezzo-soprano Gigi
Mitchell-Velasco, tenor Jeffrey Springer and bass baritone Dean Elzinga.
With a
combined force of more than 250 voices and orchestra musicians, this Progress Energy
Masterworks concert is two nights only: Saturday, March 7, at 8 p.m. at the Progress Energy
Center for the Arts – Mahaffey
Theater in St. Petersburg, and Sunday, March 8, at
7:30 p.m., at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater.
And to learn more about the music and composer Giuseppe Verdi, concertgoers are
invited to attend a pre-concert conversation in the hall one hour before
curtain time. Tickets start at $19 for the general public and are only

The Master Chorale of Tampa
Bay
Under Music
and Artistic Director Richard Zielinski, the 180-voice Master Chorale of Tampa Bay
has performed and premiered many symphonic choral works under the direction of
Jahja Ling, Robert Shaw, John Nelson, Julius Rudel, Founding Music Director
Emeritus Robert Summer and Jo-Michael Schiebe. The chorale has also
performed abroad at London’s Westminster
Cathedral and King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, among other locales.
Designated in 1989 as the principal chorus of TFO, some of its most recent
performances with the orchestra include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9,
Dvorak’s Requiem,
Schubert’s Mass No. 6, Faure’s Requiem
and Orff’s Carmina Burana.
To close the 2008/2009 Masterworks series, the Master Chorale will join the
orchestra to perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection on May 15, 16 and 17 in Tampa, St. Petersburg
and Clearwater, respectively.
