Tampa Bay Symphony Opener Features Clarinet Soloist E-mail

Since the founding of the Tampa Bay Symphony 21 years ago there has always has been an air of excitement over the first concert series of each new season. This year features an outstanding individual soloist who will perform the southeastern U.S. premiere of Sir Charles Villies Sanford's "Clarinet Concerto" The soloist is Bienvenido G. Yangco. Also appearing is the Sunshine Brass Band, performing "An English Twist."

Dr. Yangco was born in the Philippines and began studying clarinet at the age of nine. In 1970, after obtaining his Doctor of Medicine degree at Far Eastern University, Dr. Yangco was awarded the John D. Rockefeller III Fellowship Grant which enabled him to study at the Yale School of Music. At Yale, he earned the degrees of Master of Musical Arts in Performance and Master of Public Health.

Dr. Yangco was the principal clarinetist of the Yale University Concert Band. His debut solo recital was held at Carnegie Recital Hall in April 1971. In Tampa, he was soloist and member of the USF Wind Ensemble and Silver Cornet Band. He has been a pastoral musician at Sacred Heart Church for over 25 years, at St. Joseph's Church and currently at Nativity Catholic Church in Brandon.

From 1979 to 1991, Dr. Yangco was a full time faculty member at the College of Medicine at the University of South Florida (USF). Since 1991 he has established an active private practice in the Tampa Bay area as an Infectious Disease Specialist and a Clinical Associate of Medicine and Public Health at USF.

The Sunshine Brass Band, under conductor James F. Cheyne, will perform Ralph Vaughn William's "Henry the Fifth Overture." Also on the program are William Walton's "Orb and Sceptre March" written for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and Respighi's "Pines of Rome."

The Tampa Bay Symphony makes free concert tickets available to all public, private and home schooled students and music students. Call 727-442-3696 by Mon., Oct. 22, with ticket requests.

More than 90 talented volunteer musicians perform under the baton of Jack Heller, musical director and conductor, at 8 p.m. Fri., Oct. 26 at the Mahaffey Theater; 8 p.m. Sat., Oct. 27 at Ruth Eckerd Hall; and 2 p.m. Sun., Oct. 28 at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center.
