More than ever, as tuition continues to
grow, families are focused on getting the best value for their
dollar. The first step is finding the right information to make the
right college choice. U.S. News and World Report and other existing
sources may provide useful information, but to some consumers, they
are not enough on their own.
In June 2007, Eckerd College President
Donald R. Eastman III announced that Eckerd would no longer submit
data to U.S. News & World Report for its annual college
rankings. What's the alternative?
The alternative is U-CAN (the University
and College Accountability Network). Eckerd College has joined a
new web-based project called U-CAN (http://www.ucan-network.org/),
the first national consumer information tool developed by colleges
and universities -- either private or public -- to collect and
report data and qualitative information directly to the public.
Developed by the National Association of Independent Colleges and
Universities (NAICU), of which Eckerd College is a member, U-CAN
debuted September 26. Eckerd served as one of 40 pilot schools to
test U-CAN in its preliminary stages.
Eckerd is one of 11 Florida institutions
and one of nearly 600 colleges and universities participating in
the U-CAN project.
