Ellen L. Scheible of Tarpon Springs and her friend Beverly Lewis of North Carolina took a train ride to the top of Pikes Peak in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, accompanied by their copy of Tropical Breeze.
One of the nation’s most accessible peaks, it is the most visited mountain in North America and second most visited in the world behind only Japan’s Mount Fuji.
More than a half-million people visit annually, arriving via the 8.9-mile Pike’s Peak Cog Railway, the 19-mile Pikes Peak Highway or by hiking the 13-mile Barr Trail.
The first road to the summit was built in 1886-88 and the first automobile to make the climb was a two-cylinder Locomobile Steamer in 1901. The first auto race to the summit was held in 1916 and annually since, making it second only to the Indianapolis 500 in longevity.
