Nancy and Steve Eggert, Tropical Breeze subscribers from Dunedin, attended the St. Petersburg AirFest in October courtesy of tickets they received as subscribers to the newspaper.
At left, Steve took a picture of Nancy with her Tropical Breeze in an APV P7A1 (swamp vehicle) with Marine Corps Sgt. Ferguson, right and CPO Toro, left.
Steve took many other photos, including the two below. “We hadn’t been to an air show since 1981 in New Jersey, and boy did we have fun!” she wrote. “When the bi-planes flew close to the ground, upside down, even sort of sideways, I noticed that even their smoke was artistic. It had beautiful swirls and curls to them that reminded me of the witch in the Wizard of Oz, spelling out ‘surrender Dorothy’ with her green smoke. The ‘Shockwave,’ a triple engine Peterbilt truck, produced 36,000 horsepower at the speed of sound. It was unbelievable! The sounds, the flames, the speed of it zooming down the runway were fantastic! Steve and I thought it would be really cool to see it and the F-18 Hornet going side by side down the runway! And seeing those two Hornets so close, what a magnificent sight. They can fly over my house any time, day or night! One of the coolest things we saw (actually they were all cool) was a stuntman leaping from the open cockpit of a Stearman biplane to the skids of a helicopter.”
Nancy added that she realized the next day that her face was “lobster red” from looking up into the sky at all the planes. “Even though it was a very cloudy day, the sun still got through!” she said. “Next time I’ll wear suntan lotion #30.
Thank you, Tropical Breeze. It was truly an awesome day.”
