Women artists, composers and writers are
invited to enter the Clearwater Branch of the National League of
American Pen Women, Inc.'s annual contests. Last year's
competitions attracted almost 500 entries from more than 150 women
from the Tampa Bay area. Cash prizes and certificates were
awarded.
"The contests will be for all three
categories of our membership," said branch president Charrie
Moscardini. "The League consists of professional women writers,
artists and composers. And this year we're adding a category just
for fun -- a ghost story. Make our spines tingle!"
In 1897, before women could vote in
national elections, a group of women journalists, authors, and
illustrators banded together in Washington, D.C., to promote their
professions. Led by journalists Marion Longfellow O'Donoghue,
Washington Post social editor Anna Sanborn Hamilton, and Margaret
Sullivan Burke, the first woman admitted to the Congressional Press
Gallery, the women founded the League of American Pen Women.
More than 100 years later, the league has
evolved into the National League of American Pen Women and includes
more than 5,000 artists, writers, and composers from across the
country working in many fields. Now more than 50 years old, the
Clearwater branch encompasses all of Pinellas and Pasco
counties.
Official rules and an entry form are
available by mailing a business-sized self-addressed, stamped
envelope to 3530 Fairview St., Safety Harbor, FL 34695 or by
emailing huffsandy@aol.com. Specify which category you wish to
enter.
The deadline for Music and Writing entries
is Friday, Jan. 25.
Art entries will be accepted 10-10:30 a.m.
on the day of awards -- Saturday, Mar. 8, at the downtown branch of
the Clearwater Public Library, 100 Osceola St. All awards will be
presented at 2 p.m. that day at the same location.
