Dear Nanny Fran,
Have you ever had a client die on you and
no one wanted the animals?
I have had various scenarios in 14 years
of pet sitting. One scenario was a lady who was incapacitated and
the progress was not good at all. The family asked me to try to
find a home for her calico kitty. I was lucky enough to have a
wonderful client who had recently lost her kitty to heart failure
who took this dear one into her heart.
However, most instances have the animal
being killed because no family member wants the dear one. Yes,
purebred or mutt, it makes no difference. I recently had a client
die unexpectedly and the existing family wanted to assimilate the
sweetheart into their home but their own animals thwarted the
effort.
I have currently pursued with due
diligence a new home for this dear one. I have posted Barkley B.
Bearykins on various animal rescue sites. I have had color flyers
printed at my own expense and spent my own time, gas, etc. hand
delivering these flyers to veterinarians, groomers, pet food stores
and been sending this color flyer around via email to everyone. I
have asked each individual to forward this flyer on to all their
email addresses. I am trying to create a Barkley's own pet finder!
Bless his sweet soul, he deserves the most loving home possible,
that and MORE!
I am learning from this posting procedure.
I never spoke of any dollars for his acquisition. This is an
adoption identical to a human child. Barkley finding the very best
FOREVER home is the most important issue. However, I have been
receiving emails from various sources offering to "purchase" him
for what ever amount I choose or they have offered nearly $4,000
for him. I never, anywhere spoke of any dollar amount or his
purchase! I am greatly unnerved by these emails.
There are many lists such as Craig's List
where people post animals for sale for a stated dollar amount. The
improper English, grammar, etc. in these emails scares the
daylights out of me. I pray that no one responds to these people.
Are these people purchasing family pets and selling them to
foreigners who eat horse meat, dog meat, etc.? There is a huge
trade in horse meat and I would not be surprised if dogs and cats
were involved as well. If not that then the poor dears are sold by
unscrupulous people to laboratories for research. You know, the
laboratories do want your sweet tempered and healthy pet for
research... live research! They do not want to be bitten or
scratched when they are torturing them with electrodes and scalpels
in the name of "research." These laboratories have perfected the
"debarking" of these hapless puppies so they won't bark or cry
out. These research facilities pay top dollar for healthy, lovable
family pets. You thought Michael Vick was the devil incarnate
didn't you?
I have been sending Barkley's picture
everywhere; however, whenever there is interest I have been sending
a multiple page questionnaire to the prospective new owner. That
questionnaire is several pages long and asks for social security
numbers, driver's license number, address, place of employment,
veterinarians familiar with the family and their pets or prior
pets, etc. If the prospective owner is uncomfortable with any of
these questions then immediately they are no longer considered as a
prospective new owner. One has to be this careful and even more so.
The dear animals cannot telephone you or I and say that they are
being kept tied in the back yard and neglected, or kept in the
garage when the summer time temperatures reach 120 degrees, on and
on and on. They are as defenseless as any human baby, toddler or
child. We need to always remember that we are the "guardians"...
guardians protect!
If anyone would like to adopt my
grandchild, Barkley B. Bearykins, please contact me. He would be in
my home if I did not have kitties. My children are all rescued from
the streets and always will be. I cannot displace them for Barkley
whom I love with all my heart.
