Flame belches from a Civil War-era reproduction cannon as Scott Anderson, left, leads a cannon-firing drill for the Florida Independent Artillery, Company B, C.S.A. at the Safety Harbor Museum of Regional History. The group rehearses for historical accuracy, but more importantly, for safety. Even without cannon balls, the gunpowder is real, dangerously explosive and a miscalculation could result in injury or even death. Each of the participants has a proscribed role true to the era in which the cannon was a primary weapon of war.
Participating in the drill are (l-r) Anderson; Dan Blair, Brandon; Greg Chappell, Brandon; and, William Noles, Tampa. Not pictured is Anthony Kosak, Palm Harbor. In addition to drilling at the museum, the re-enactors recently participated in Memorial Day ceremonies at Safety Harbor’s VFW Post 10093, firing the cannon in a salute to veterans of all wars. Participants said the cannon blasts set off nearby car alarms.
