Gloria C. Whitman, 86, Safety Harbor, died
May 1, 2008 at home. She was a personnel supervisor for AT&T
and a life member of the Telecom Pioneers Club. She also was a
member of the National Health Federation, the Briar Creek Social
Club, the Audubon Society and Women of Espiritu Santo, CC-WES. She
is survived by her sister, Doris Meditz, and several cousins.
Virginia Rose “Nana”
Harrington, 86, Safety Harbor and St. Petersburg, died May 3, 2008
at Manor Care of Dunedin. She was born March 22, 1922 in Lynn, MA
and lived there until moving to Florida in 1959. She is survived by
her husband of 66 years, Walter “Hank” Harrington; a
daughter, Deeva Mootsey (James); a granddaughter, Omega Dane
Kreidler (Derek); and, a great-granddaughter, Katie Virginia
Kreidler.
Margot D. Bane, 90, Safety Harbor and
Clearwater, died May 4, 2008 after a brief illness. She was born
May 18, 1917 in London, England and lived in the Greater Syracuse,
NY area for many years before moving to Florida in 1979. Before
retiring, she was an LPN at Community General Hospital, Syracuse;
secretary to the librarian at West Genesee Central High School,
Camillus, NY; and, an EKG Tech at Mease Hospitals in Dunedin and
Safety Harbor. She enjoyed gardening and had a special interest in
orchids. She attended Espiritu Santo Catholic Church. She was
preceded in death by husbands Louis Carroll Afforde in 1961 and
John Willard Bane in 1972. She is survived by four daughters:
Janice A. Smardon, Palm Harbor; Susan K. Noble, Colorado Springs,
CO; Marilyn L. Jennings, Oxford, MS; and, Therea E. Loomis, Avon,
OH; one son, Mark David Afforde, Bellevue, WA; six grandchildren;
and, seven great-granchildren.
Robert J. Roth, 64, Safety Harbor, died
May 4, 2008 at Morton Plant Hospital. He is survived by his son
Robert; daughter-in-law Mary; and four grandsons, Thomas, Nicholas,
Samuel and Benjamin, of Old Lyme, CT. He is also survived by his
sister-in-law, Patricia Roth and several nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by his two brothers William and Charles.
Mary Jane Lamb, 75, Safety Harbor, died
May 5, 2008 at home. She moved here in 1968 from Kenton, OH. She
attended Espiritu Santo Catholic Church. She is survived by her
daughters, Kathleen Salceies and Jennifer Lancaster, and their
families.
Rachel Morningstar Hoffman, 23, died May
7, 2008 in circumstances which have received extensive news
coverage and resulted in the creation of the Rachel Morningstar
Hoffman Foundation. This beautiful girl, born December 17, 1984,
leaves behind her mother, Margie Weiss; father, Irv Hoffman;
stepfather, Mike Weiss; grandmothers, Rosylen and Roslyn; aunts
Barbara, Jeannie and Ava; uncles Jack and Jerry; first cousins,
Bryan, Lana, Harry, Becky, Marni and family, Dan and family, Jason
and family; the Weiss family and several other family members; her
cat Bently; and friends from around the world who loved her dearly.
She was a graduate of Florida State University with a B.A. in
Psychology and was looking forward to pursuing Culinary School. She
smiled often, laughed heartily, loved people, celebrated life, had
a generous heart and always had a place in her heart and at her
table for friends, loved ones and those in need. She enjoyed
cooking, music and spending time with friends; loved her family,
nature and animals. The family would like to thank their friends,
community and Rabbi Klein for the outpouring of love and support
during this difficult time. She lived her life in the words of the
Beatles, "all you need is love" and will be deeply missed by her
family and friends.
Ed "Lefty" Canterbury, 71, Safety Harbor,
died May 24, 2008 at Morton Plant Mease Countryside Hospital after
a long battle with Parkinson’s disease and dementia. He was
born March 31, 1937 in Mingo County, WV. He married his high-school
sweetheart Beverly W. Canterbury in August 1956 and celebrated the
birth of their son Mark in June 1959. The family lived in Pinellas
County for 19 years before moving to Marietta, GA. From Georgia
they moved to Muskegon, MI and returned to Pinellas County in 1990.
He worked at Sealed Power for 25 years and CMB Marketing in
Lakeland for 10 years. In high school, he played baseball –
where he got his nickname, Lefty, as a left-handed pitcher, and was
quarterback of the football team. He was an avid golfer throughout
his adult life. With his employer, Sealed Power, Ed was involved
with NASCAR. He enjoyed spending time with his son Mark at sporting
events including baseball and NASCAR, traveling, collecting wine,
fishing and spending time with family and friends. In addition, he
was a former Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order
of the Elks, Seminole Lodge #2519. He is survived by his wife of 52
years, Beverly; his son Mark Edward Canterbury; brothers Gene
Canterbury, David Canterbury, Frank Canterbury of Michigan, Gerald
Canterbury of West Virginia, and sister Mary Brown of California;
brother Chris Canterbury preceded him in death. He also is survived
by half-brothers Brian Canterbury, Steve Canterbury and Jimmy
Hutchinson of Michigan; half-sisters Tina Canterbury of Michigan,
Debbie Rothrock of North Carolina, and Susie Hutchinson of West
Virginia; as well as a large extended family of nieces and
nephews.
Patricia Elizabeth Wollman, 83, formerly
of Safety Harbor, died May 27, 2008 at Hospice Woodside, Pinellas
Park. She was born January 25, 1925 in Detroit, MI to Richard R.
Tobin and Emma May "Bunny" Tobin, both of Michigan. She was married
to Lewis B. Wollman, who preceded her in death in 2000. The couple
lived in many places including New York, Chicago and San Francisco
before moving to Pinellas County in 1978. Her enthusiasm for life
was evident both on stage and off. She performed in countless
productions on stage, in film and on television, including the Pat
and Johnny Show (Detroit), The Trade Inn (Chicago), The Sound of
Music, St. John Terrell's Music Circus and the Detective. She was
an announcer, director and commentator on radio for many years and
performed voice-overs well into her 70s. In addition to film, radio
and stage, she held prestigious positions with Time magazine and
Lane Bryant, Inc. She modeled for many clothing lines and taught
etiquette classes. Her enthusiasm also was exemplified in her
countless volunteer efforts, which began in her younger years and
continued after her move to Florida. She gave time and energy to
may organizations including Bay Bouquet Garden Club, where she
focused on the beautification of Dunedin by planting trees, Dunedin
Historical Society, Dunedin Council of Organizations, and Welcome
Newcomers Club of Pinellas. Along with many other awards, she
received First Volunteer of the Year Award, Dunedin; Dunedin
History Maker Award; Delightful Dunedin Award. She is survived by
her cousins, Tom "Tommy" Phillips of Newaygo, MI, Jim and Jaci
Buswell of Ft. Mill, SC and Jeff and Lea LeVines of Tampa.
James Edward Moore, 86, Safety Harbor,
died May 30, 2008. He was an attorney, a member of the Florida Bar
and a U.S. Marine Veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife,
Grace A. Moore. He is survived by eight children: Kim, Brooke,
Kerry, Evan, Kristy, Kathy, Kelly and Kasey; as well as 13
grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Carol F. Cooney, 83, Safety Harbor, died
May 31, 2008. She was born Carol Francis Ford in Boston, MA, in
1925 and moved to New Jersey as a small child. She attended Red
Bank High School and went on to graduate from Carnegie Mellon
University as a research chemist. She went to work for ESSO
(Standard Oil of New Jersey), which is now Exxon. She was a member
of the research team that developed the formula for 10W30 motor
oil. In 1956 she met Robert V. Cooney, who was stationed in the
Army at Fort Monmouth, NJ. They fell in love and were married June
23, 1956 in Red Bank New Jersey. They moved to Aurora, IL, and ran
Spring Studios Photography for 25 years while also raising a
family. They moved to Florida in 1983 and became active members of
Northwood Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir and was
an officer in many of the organizations within the church. She is
survived by her husband of 51 years, Robert; a daughter, CJ Fisher;
and two step sons, Vernon Cooney and David Baughman; 10
grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
