To the Editor:
On behalf of the RCS Food Bank, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who made this year’s Letter Carriers’ Food Drive a success. On May 10 we were able to collect 216,000 pounds of food in one day; which will enable us to serve over 15,000 hungry people over the next three months.
This would not have been possible without the dedicated assistance of many people. First I would like to thank the hardworking letter carriers who went above and beyond their normal duties that whole week, first distributing postcards and bags and then collecting the many pounds of food that was left at the curbside by the people on their routes. I would, also, like to thank the community who generously placed those bags at the curb to assist in feeding the hungry.
Next I would like to thank all our regular volunteers. RCS Food Bank has only eight employees, but each day between 30 and 40 volunteers assist us in our daily task of distributing food to the hungry in our community. Without them we could not function and yet despite the fact they are here every day they also came out on a Saturday to give of their time to make this day a success.
And then there were the many other volunteers who also came forward to help us process this great amount of food, driving trucks and vans, unloading and loading at the post offices, sorting and packing food at the RCS Food Bank, cooking and serving food to the hungry volunteers, checking in and training volunteers. Without the more than 400 volunteers, many pounds of food would never have made it into our warehouse. And lastly I would like to thank my wonderful, faithful staff who so diligently helped to lead all those volunteers for a successful day.
