A Rooster’s Tale: Catch Me If You Can E-mail
Sunday, 01 June 2008

as told by George Weiss

Catch me if you can. I’m just a little guy. I only weigh a couple of pounds but I have a big voice. I’m a native of this little town and I love it here. I’ve lived here all my life on this ten acres of Eden in the heart of the city. I’ve been chased by dogs, have had red tailed hawks dive at me, but I’ve lived here with the possums, raccoons, squirrels and field mice for all these years.

I don’t know who my mom and pop were and I’m certainly not what you would call a thoroughbred. I’m just a guy that’s so happy to have lived on this beautiful ten acres of mine all my life where I love to get up at sunrise and tell everyone what a wonderful world I have. Well, it’s never been a problem before, but it seems that my morning announcements after all these years are bothering some folks, probably some big city folks who like to sleep late and sunrise and sunset are nothing to crow about. Well, I guess the word has gotten to the code enforcement guy (a nice fellow) and even the mayor and I hear I gotta leave town and be put in a cage somewhere. I don’t know what a cage is but it doesn’t sound like my ten acres.

Some new folks have moved into my home area and they really like me. They bring me corn and even put out a water dish for me. I like to follow them around once in awhile when I have nothing else to do, but I guess this is coming to an end cause I hear they’re going to CATCH ME IF THEY CAN! If so, by the time anyone reads this I’ll probably be locked up in a nice clean cage somewhere.

It’s been a good life all these years here on the most beautiful ten acres in Safety Harbor and if I’m forced to go I have lived my way and hope some others can find happiness on my home.

I do think that the new folks here will remember me as the guy who welcomed them with a loud HELLO when they first came here.

PS If they haven’t caught me by the time you read this, get up early some morning and come listen to me welcome this wonderful world. My world is at 1350 MLK (4th St. N.) right here in town.

Thanks from me.
