To the Editor:

We know we’re late saying thank you for the concert tickets to the Florida Orchestra at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Sorry, but life goes by so fast. It was awesome! This is from someone who actually attended Grateful Dead concerts. Great seats, we could see every little finger movement that the lead violinist used. Then, to be able to speak to the artist himself after the show was an honor beyond description! Thank you again.

It was cool to look around and see people in the audience with their eyes shut swaying to the music or playing air guitar with their left hands, imaging their fingers on the neck of the violins. The music made you think you were frolicking over a babbling brook or running through a meadow.

When James Ehnes, the soloist in the Beethoven violin concerto, played, all the other members looked in awe, nodding their heads as the music flowed over and through them. And boy, can this guy play! One piece seemed to go on for more than 40 minutes.

Ehnes came back for repeated bows. He said, “Since we have Beethoven and Brahms, we should also have some Bach,” which turned out to be a lively prelude to Partita #3, (which I learned later on.)

(And with his boyish looks, he ain’t bad to look at, girls!)

Steve met James during intermission, carrying his 1715 Stradivarius tucked under his arm. He asked him if he ever played an Irish jig? James replied, “No, I don’t know what that is.” Guess he only plays the “classical stuff.”

It was a truly musical and magical date that we both enjoy immensely.
