Did you know that students who take music lessons have higher test scores and are more successful in reading, math and science than students who are not enrolled in a music classes? During research for our company, Piano Lessons In Your Home, Inc., we found studies which identified these learning discrepancies among students. These particular excerpts were obtained from an article entitled, “Does Music Have an Impact on the Development of Students?” by Tony Mickela published on the website childrenmusicworkshop.com/musicopenmind.html.

•    The Norwegian Research Council for Science and the Humanities states that “…students having musical competence were more likely to achieve success in school and can out-perform non-music students on achievement tests in reading and math.”

•    “…high school music students have higher grade point averages than non-music students in the same school. This same study found that 16% of the music students had a 4.0 overall grade point average and only 5% of the non-music students had a 4.0 overall grade point average. A study of graduates of the New York City School of Performing Arts found that 90% of them go on to college… to be successful in music, takes a great deal of self-discipline and… “music majors have the highest SAT scores in all areas.”

•    “Just 15 minutes a week of private keyboard instruction, along with group singing at pre-school, dramatically improved a kind of intelligence needed for high-level math and science…”

•    Music lessons appear to strengthen the links between brain neurons and build new spatial reasoning, said psychologist Frances Rauscher of University of California-Irvine.

•    “Music instruction can improve a child’s spatial intelligence for long periods of time — perhaps permanently. Frances Raucher’s study compared 19 pre-schoolers who took the (music) lessons and 14 classmates enrolled in no special music programs. After eight months, she found a 46% boost in spatial IQs for the young musicians and a 6% improvement for children not taught music.”

These findings reaffirm the importance of music education. Conduct your own research by typing “benefits of music instruction,” into your preferred search engine. In the meantime, here is an easy and convenient way to begin experiencing the benefits of music instruction immediately. Piano Lessons in Your Home Inc. is a unique company that has been providing quality music instruction to children and adults since 1996. This company places diverse and experienced piano, guitar, and voice instructors in students’ homes and focuses on engaging all learning styles. PLIYH also offers its families convenient scheduling, optional recitals and a $10,000 Musical Lending Library full of resources.

In-home instruction has been the preferred method of piano study for decades. It is a comfortable way for children to begin learning on their own instrument and in the environment where they will be practicing. PLIYH requires references and background checks of all instructors, only requires a month to month commitment and charges no additional pre-registration or recital fees.
