To the Editor:
Once again Safety Harbor lived up to its name and Hurricane Fay left us alone. That didn’t stop Safety Harbor firefighters from preparing and making sure we were ready by stocking up on supplies, reviewing emergency plans and standing by to evacuate citizens if needed.
You may ask, how do I know if my neighborhood is ordered to evacuate or there is a danger to my home? The answer is Safety Harbor’s Code Red system.
Everyone knows to call 911 in an emergency, but 911 calling you? Should an evacuation be called for, a disaster threatens your area or even an amber alert for a missing child in your neighborhood is reported, the system will call and give specific details on what the problem is and how to proceed. This is a high speed phone connection that delivers the most up-to-date information available during emergencies and is compatible with TDD/TTY for the hearing impaired.
This service is free of charge, but you must register to receive calls. Register at www.cityofsafetyharbor.com. Go to the fire department’s page and follow the link to Code Red. You also can call the downtown fire station at 727-724-1520 (non-emergency calls only, please!).
