Safety Harbor resident John “Bumblefoot” Moeller, a retired circus clown, has a new hobby decorating envelopes with underwater reef scenes. He explained in a recent note,
“It started out a number of years ago when I applied ‘temporary tatoos’ or stickers on letters and envelopes. That brought compliments, so I decided to take things a step further with personal art. (I don’t consider myself an artist.) Yet, more compliments came to my ears.
A simple drawing can be made in 15 minutes. The one on this envelope took about 35 minutes, but I figure if it brightens one’s day it’s worthwhile. After all, an 81-year-old man is limited in his activity. To those who know me and remember my days of clowning, yes, it’s been about eight years since I opened the tins of greasepaint and donned the costume to bring smiles to my audience.
To the aged, I say, ‘You’re not useless; there is something you can do to brighten the days of others, if but a smile or a friendly “Hello.”’”
