The Florida Orchestra’s Pops Season Opens With Salute To Oscar Winners

by Henry Adams

Special to Tropical Breeze

The Florida Orchestra kicks off the 2006-07 season with a special performance by Van Cliburn, with the famed pianist playing Tchaikovsky. Stefan Sanderling conducts the opening performance at 8 p.m. Mon., Sept. 25 at the Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg.

All series packages, which also includes the morning Coffee Concerts, are now on sale, and single tickets to all concerts go on sale on Monday, Aug. 21. Subscriber Appreciation Days are Aug. 14-18 when orchestra subscribers can purchase single tickets to other concerts not included on their subscriptions and/or exchange subscription tickets for other concerts before tickets go on sale to the general public.

For the upcoming season, Florida Orchestra Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman has prepared a musical buffet of pop, jazz, classic rock, film scores, Broadway hits and holiday favorites with an all-star cast of talent in the Raymond James Super Pops series.

The series opens with a multi-media salute to Academy Award-winning films, including “Ben Hur,” “Doctor Zhivago,” “The Godfather,” “Casablanca” and “Out of Africa.” The 6-piece band Flash Cadillac follows in October, taking center stage with such classic rock hits as Blueberry Hill, Splish Splash, Dancing in the Streets, Pretty Woman and other hits of the ’50s and ’60s. The November pops is a “Rodgers & Hammerstein Celebration” with songs from “South Pacific,” “Oklahoma!,” “The King & I,” “Sound of Music” and other Broadway blockbusters.

For the fourth pops, the orchestra and the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay team up in December for “A Christmas Spectacular” of best-loved carols and other holiday fare, along with multi-award-winning actress Nanette Fabray’s reading of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas.

Cuban-born trumpet master Arturo Sandoval will delight audiences in January with his white-hot Latin and jazz stylings, which The New York Times hails as simply “spectacular.”  The golden voice of Jack Jones promises a romantic February night of love songs and ballads by Cole Porter, Burt Bacharach, the Gershwins and others. Roger Williams returns later in the month with his encyclopedic repertoire of piano hits of light classics, pop, jazz, blues, romantic rhapsodies and more. And closing the pops season in May will be the irrepressible, multi-talented composer, conductor, pianist and host extraordinaire, Marvin Hamlisch. All concerts are performed in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater.

Concertgoers may build their own concert series with Pick-A-Six Pack. Choose any six from the eight pops programs and 14 Masterworks concerts.
