Dear Nanny Fran,
Is it true there is another pet food
recall?
Sadly, this will continue as along as we
buy commercially prepared pet food. The only safe method is to
prepare the food yourself. Over one year ago I wrote a very long
article about pet food when thousands of animals died. (Please
refer to Ask Nanny Fran Archives at TropicalBreeze.com for more
columns on the subject.) Many animals were not even listed among
the casualties as their symptoms and death occurred before the
companies involved found the intestinal fortitude to be upfront
with the consumer. Each day they waited to speak up they made
thousands of dollars from our purchase of their product. No wonder
they stalled, they were hoping that this issue was simply "a bad
dream" or that it would simply fade into nothingness.
If you wish to check out the current
products thought to be tainted with things other than pure, natural
and wholesome ingredients please check the following website:

Again this weekend I walked and played
with Bailey. If you met Bailey you would never know that he nearly
died two years ago. Yes, thousands of dollars and several blood
transfusions later he was pulled back from the brink of death. The
vet diagnosis was: immune system reaction to annual shots. His
mother immediately changed his life. She now does titers each year
in lieu of the standard tsunami dose of chemicals termed annual
shots. She also changed his meals to homemade rather than store
bought. She is simply "over it" with dealing with the two major
items in her dear one's life that were trying to kill him -- food
and annual shots.
She prepares rice, mixed vegetables, and
other vitamin and mineral additives once weekly and stores the
mixture in the refrigerator and freezer. No killer chemicals, no
corn, no wheat, no artificial ANYTHING in his daily meals.
Treats are another issue of concern. I
have received emails and been told of the dangers of certain chew
bones made commercially and most recently I heard of an otherwise
young and healthy dog dying. His owner bought a smoked real bone,
I've seen them everywhere, and pieces of it broke off in his
intestinal tract. Now, he is in heaven and his owner has an $11,000
vet bill. If anyone could have saved this dear one, this facility
certainly would have done so with their fine staff.
Treats can be given; however, I recommend
raw veggies instead of commercially prepared anything! Reading
their labels sends shivers up my spine. The corn, wheat, sugars,
preservatives and colorings agents serve one purpose. They make
money for the manufacturer. They do not promote healthy bodies.
Also avoid chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions or ANYTHING sweetened
with Xylitol. HIDE your sugar free candy and chewing gum. Pets with
diabetic owners are particularly at risk.
Bailey is the happiest and healthiest pup
in the county thanks to his personal chef!
