Installing A ‘Speed Pillow’
(l-r), Lenny
DeGroat, Jeff Schaaf and Glenn Goss of Safety Harbor’s Street and
Maintenance division of the Public Works Department install a rubber
pad referred to as a “speed pillow” or “split speed hump” on Seventh
Avenue near Main Street.
The device is less obtrusive than speed bumps
made of asphalt or concrete, but has the same general effect — slowing
traffic. Seventh Avenue residents had complained to the city that their
street was being used as a shortcut by commuters seeking to avoid
backups. The possibility of installing such devices in other locations
will be among the topics at a public open house 6:30-8 p.m. on
Wednesday, Aug. 16 at the Safety Harbor Community Center, 650 Ninth
Ave. S. Consultants and city staff are to present a variety of design
alternatives intend to address traffic that cuts through neighborhoods,
congested intersections, speeding and other traffic problems.
The
Downtown Safety Harbor Mobility Study addresses the area between Fourth
St. N. (MLK St. N.) and Seventh St. S.; bordered on the west by Tenth
Avenue and Tampa Bay to the east. For more information, call
727-724-1555.
