Jamie Gregor, East Lake High School Senior
|
When East Lake High School student Jamie Gregor discovered that the Safety Harbor American Legion Auxiliary was holding a food drive, she had an idea. Why don't the Auxiliary and the high school join forces to make the food drive bigger and better?
Liz Paradise, Auxiliary president, and Rebekah Whaley, Community Service chairman, were quick to take Jamie up on that idea. The high school was having their annual food drive and they hadn't found a recipient for the food yet. The Auxiliary was already planning to give their food drive donations to the Safety Harbor Neighborhood Family Center.
So they agreed that the Auxiliary would pick up the food donations at the high school, and together with what the Auxiliary had already collected, deliver it to the Center.
With that simple idea and a partnership between two organizations who want to give back to the community, the food was delivered to the Center on Thursday, October 23. More than 200 cans of food and many other nonperishable items went a very long way to fill up the food pantry at the Center. This food will now be made available to those in the community who need it.
