Enough Is Enough - Go Away E-mail

Mayor Pam Corbino has lost the most significant asset any public official can possess — trust. She will be doing the electorate a favor if her disappearance of the past month can continue through the next regular commission meeting on Monday, July 17. At that point she will trigger a clause in the city’s charter that states an elected official may be disqualified for office by failing to attend two consecutive regular meetings of the commission without being excused. Given her relationships with at least two of the other four commissioners, being excused seems unlikely. Although the most recent allegation — that she attempted to persuade a city employee to give her access to another commissioner’s personal information — is disputed, Corbino’s defense has revealed at least two apparent lies and suggests more. While acknowledging she did approach the city employee, she stated in an email to City Manager Wayne Logan that she first sought to get the information from him, but that he was on the telephone. Logan had taken the day off and wasn’t even in City Hall. Furthermore, she concocted an argument that access to commissioners’ personnel files had been a concern raised by the city’s outside auditor during a meeting with her. The auditor, when questioned at a public meeting, said he never had such a conversation with Corbino. In addition, Corbino’s characterization of the matter as “misconstrued,” by implication labels the city’s Public Information Officer a liar. By Logan’s account, the employee immediately went to her boss, William Cropsey, and told him about Corbino’s request. She said Corbino told her “she was the only person in City Hall that she (Corbino) could trust.” Perhaps Corbino can explain why the only employee she can trust would join in a conspiracy to accuse her of underhanded behavior. Commissioner Kathleen Earle, whose Social Security number allegedly was requested, has filed a complaint with the Florida Commission on Ethics. She rightfully asks what possible need Corbino had for such information except “as an action with malicious intent.” All of this still might be dismissed as indeed some kind of terrible misunderstanding if there weren’t so much history attached. It was just a year ago that Corbino sought to fire City Manager Logan because she believed he had improperly diverted $45,000 in city funds to his state retirement account. She never has explained exactly how she came across the check that was her evidence. Perhaps there was another city employee she thought she could trust to provide her confidential information. However, her source was forgotten and apologies made when it became clear that Logan not only was entitled to the payment, but it was part of his employment contract — approved by Corbino and the city commission. Then there was the baffling incident in which Corbino apparently used her school email account to secretly instruct a city resident on how to challenge the city’s code enforcement board and the other party in a neighborhood spat — Commissioner Kara Bauer. Enough is enough. Just go away.
