WHY:
In conjunction with this
weekend’s Florida Orchestra concert performances (February 6 at Tampa
Bay Performing
Arts Center
and February 8 at Ruth Eckerd Hall) erhu virtuoso Betti Xiang and
conductor David Alan Miller present two separate presentations in St. Petersburg to
introduce and demonstrate the erhu, a two-string bowed Chinese instrument.

An informal discussion about Chen/He’s The Butterfly
Lovers, along with demonstrations on the erhu by Xiang. It is part of
Studio 620’s current “A Celebration of Diversity” art exhibit
and related activities. Hosted by Bob Devin Jones, Artistic Director
thestudio@620. Seating is limited for this free event.

Miller and Xiang will do a somewhat more formal presentation
at St. Petersburg
College talking about the
history of the instrument and its role on Chinese culture and music.
Xiang will give a performance on erhu, both solo works and works accompanied by
David Alan Miller on piano. This event is being held in cooperation with St. Petersburg College. On air personalities from
WUSF radio will also be participating. This is a free event and is open
to the public.
