The Florida Orchestra
By Henry Adams
March at The Florida Orchestra (TFO) has more music to talk about than space available here. With favorites for both fans of the classics and the pops, there’s the monumental Verdi Requiem, a morning Coffee Concert featuring music by Grieg, Glinka, Mendelssohn and more, trumpeter extraordinaire Doc Severinsen in a night a fiery Latin favorites, Albanian violinist Tedi Papavrami in Henri Dutilleux’s Tree of Dreams on a program of music by Ravel and Cesar Franck, and a tribute to the phenomenal film scores of John Williams. All the details are online at www.floridaorchestra.org, but here are a few highlights.
Hailed as “Verdi’s greatest opera” and “one of the most ambitious and lavish sacred works in the entire orchestral repertoire”, Music Director Stefan Sanderling and The Florida Orchestra are joined by The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay to perform Verdi’s Requiem. The last time TFO and the Chorale performed the work, The Tampa Tribune said, “it was the collective voice of The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay that stole the night for many listeners…the choir sounded superb.” Exploding with drama, moving musical passages and powerful operatic outbursts, this music moves your mind and heart with such a sonorous impact that you can even feel it in your body. This Progress Energy Masterworks concert is two nights only on March 7 in St. Petersburg and March 8 in Clearwater.
Armed with charm, class, witty remarks, a flair for fashion and the soaring sounds of his trumpet, Doc Severinsen is joined by a virtuoso ensemble from Mexico for a night of fire-infused pop tunes, gypsy jazz and Latin and Spanish favorites. This Raymond James Pops concert is March 13 in Tampa and March 14 in St. Petersburg.
The next Raymond James Pops concert is sure to be a high-energy night of everybody’s favorites by the always amazing John Williams, featuring music from Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, E.T., Jaws, Hook, Superman and other hit films. Richard Kaufman conducts the orchestra and shares lively anecdotes from his years working in Hollywood and playing violin under the baton of John Williams. These concerts are March 27, 28 and 29 in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater.
The Florida Orchestra regularly performs at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in Tampa, the Progress Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg, and Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater.
