Galaxy Center for the Performing Arts: Classes, Camps and Musicians E-mail
Wednesday, 18 February 2009

It's every rock n' roller's dream. The screaming fans, the flashy stage effects, the television coverage, and recording you own songs in a professional studio. But for 13-year old Mitchell, 14-year old Daniel and 15-year olds Dillon and Lucas, it's business as usual. The four teens traveled across the country with their dads from San Diego to St. Petersburg to record their first EP. They are members of "Light of Doom," a band playing 80s metal glam rock standards and their own compositions.  For the next two weeks, they will be working on a three song EP with their producer, Kelly Scott Nunn, himself a guitarist with the touring metal band, "Maylene and the Sons of Disaster."

The boys finished fourth on Fox Television's The Next Great American Band, in 2007, competing with thousands of bands and going head to head-banger with some seasoned professionals. Since then, they have continued to hone their music, playing at some very large venues in Southern California, such as the well-known SOMA San Diego and at House of Blues in Anaheim. Taking a few weeks off from school, they are in town, working every day in the recording studios at the Galaxy Center for the Arts in St. Petersburg. Nunn says the music is all original work by the guys and said their style is 70s rock meets indy/screamo. They hope to have the EP mixed and ready for release in March, with plans to scout for a recording contract with a major label. Their fans will be able to sample the EP on the band's MySpace page and on YouTube.

Kirsten Perea, the owner and Program Director of the Galaxy Center for the Performing Arts says that they have been in the business of teaching the performing arts to all ages for 20 years. Located at 8045 46th Avenue N in St. Petersburg, the facility boasts a 50-seat theater with a completely outfitted stage, and wardrobe department. There is also a digital photography studio with top of the line computer equipment, a full recording studio with professional 48-track recording and mixing equipment, a dance studio and even a beautiful Steinway concert grand piano.

The classes they offer range from acting for camera and television commercials to theater productions; from piano and voice, from "Create your own TV show" to "how to be a pop star" with two recording sessions included in the tuition, and even digital photography, and film editing. The stage productions performed by the student actors are videotaped with digital equipment. Currently the students are rehearsing for a full production of the Little Shop of Horrors. There will be a spring acting camp offered in March culminating in a performance for family and friends. And of course, four summer camps are being offered for kids ages 7 to 17.

The center also offers classes in the production side of the entertainment industry, with sound engineering taught by Johnny Nunn, who is the main recording engineer for the studio. The studio is available to outside groups on an hourly basis. This service has been used by some well-known bands, gospel groups and chorus groups.
