PROGRAMS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
SPRING ART CAMP - New Program!

Monday - Thursday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The Tampa Museum of Art offers a Spring Art Camp, April 6 - 9, for children 6 - 10. The camp will be held for four days, each with half and full-day options. Certified Hillsborough County art instructors teach all classes. Children will have the opportunity to explore art, media and techniques, expand their creative boundaries and learn new skills. SUMMER ART CAMP - Registration Open!

Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The Tampa Museum of Art presents the popular Summer Art Camp, June 22 - July 31, for kids 6 - 14. Campers explore a variety of styles and movements in art and participate in exciting hands-on art making experiences including clay, sculpture, painting, drawing and decorative arts. Summer Art Camp projects are based on learning the method and media of making art in the creative environment of the Tampa Museum of Art. Children gain an appreciation and understanding of art, as well as the ability to develop their individual talent for self-expression. Certified Hillsborough County art instructors teach all classes. June 22 - July 31

 

START WITH THE ARTS PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAM - Thursday, 10 - 10:45 a.m.

In conjunction with the VSA arts Early Childhood Education Program, the museum presents Start with the Arts. The unique curriculum provides an art-based learning approach to literacy and includes activities in visual arts, creative drama, dance, movement and music. Program is geared for 3 - 5 year-old children accompanied by a parent/guardian. The fee is $4 per adult and child, and $2 for each additional child, and includes all class supplies. April 2 / Children explore digital art through the use of traditional art materials.

April 9 / Class explores the art of animation.

April 16 / The art of recycling comes to life with a sci-fi themed assemblage.

April 30 / Kids create abstract paintings using a connected string.

 

May 7 / Children use their hands to create tulip paintings.

May 14 / Class creates a 3D object using an ordinary muffin cup.

May 21 / Students create a picture that combines art, décor and recycling.

May 28 / Children combine chemistry and art to create op-art to wear or share.


THE ART SPOT - Saturday, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Free drop-in program
This Saturday morning free drop-in program offers children the opportunity to explore their own creativity by visiting the galleries and creating art projects in the museum's classroom. Projects are self-guided and offer a different art activity each week. No registration required. The Art Spot is a Target Art sponsored program.

 

April Theme: Cultural Explorations

April 4 / Students make sand paintings using symbols from the Navajo culture.

April 18 / Kids create aboriginal style paintings.

April 25 / Students paint in the style of the Japanese painting.

 

May Theme: Printmaking

May 2 / Students transfer images onto pendents.

May 9 / Students learn about the traditions of Japanese fisherman and create fish prints.

May 16 / Kids use paint to create monoprints - a fun printmaking technique.

May 30 / Students learn about Andy Warhol while making Warhol inspired prints.

 

June Theme: Post-Digital Age

June 6 / Students use technology to make realistic drawings.

June 13 / Kids learn how to make pictures come alive in an animation flip book.

June 20 / Students learn about recycled technology to create new art pieces.

June 27 / Students learn about the art of Roy Lichtenstein and Chuck Close, then create pixilated

inspired images.

 

July Theme: Building a new TMA

July 11 / Kids are inspired to design their own 3D art gallery.

July 18 / Students use air-dry clay to make a sculpture.

July 25 / Kids learn to make paper airplanes with the help of local paper airplane artist Dean Mackey.

 

JUNIOR DOCENT PROGRAM - Thursday, 3:45 - 5:30 p.m.

Free for high school students

Junior Docent meetings are held the second and fourth Thursday of each month and offered free of charge. High school students meet new friends while learning about art and culture. The Junior Docent program at TMA provides an exciting experience for teenagers as they explore history and culture through art.

CLUB ART FOR TEENS! - Wednesday, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Program held at Jefferson High School unless otherwise noted.Club Art is offered free-of-charge and scheduled on select Wednesday afternoons during the school year. Club Art offers teens the chance to meet and work with art professionals, learn about careers in the arts and experiment with a wide-range of media and techniques. Activities include guest lectures, workshops, behind-the-scenes visits to museums and galleries, and the opportunity to create art in a studio environment. A variety of snacks and refreshments are provided.

PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS

ART LOVER'S TEA - Last Thursday of each month, 2 p.m.

PAINTING NATURE WITH ARTIST TAYLOR IKIN - Saturday, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Fee is $65 / Museum members $60

Join this creative and exciting watercolor workshop with well-known artist Taylor Ikin, at Nature's Classroom in Thonotassa, FL.  Ikin shares her approach to capturing the essence of the environment. USF OSHER LIFE LONG LEARNING COURSES

COOKING SECRETS FOR YOU AND MORE - Fridays, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

Registration fee: $50, plus $40 materials fee / Held at TMA

Join retired professional caterer Toni Haynes for a six-week series of cooking demonstrations where she shares her secrets of the trade. Participants learn how to prepare a romantic dinner for two or a feast for a multi-family reunion, enjoy generous samples of the dishes she prepares, and receive printed copies of the recipes used in class. IMAGES OF MEXICO: A CULTURAL HISTORY - Friday, 1:30 - 3:15 p.m.

Registration Fee: $40 / Held at TMA

Instructor Sally Matthews will acquaint participants with Mexican images and history during this six-week class. The course explores universal images found in Mexican heritage and look at the influence of such women as Doña Marina (Cortez's interpreter), Madame Calderon de la Barca, and Frida Kahlo. Presentations will touch upon various eras of history, including the pre-Conquest, Conquest, era of the Viceroys, and the shaky march toward democracy.  Students learn about the town of San Miguel de Allende, recently designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Class art activities include making and firing a clay tile, making silver-clay milagros, and creating a ‘nicho,' a tin and glass box that holds personal miniature images. SPECIAL EVENTS

VSA ARTS OF FLORIDA FESTIVAL: ART IN MOTION - Thursday, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

The Tampa Museum of Art presents the third annual VSA arts of Florida Festival at its interim location in West Tampa. This year's theme, Art in Motion, emphasizes dance, music, and the visual arts. Students from six Hillsborough County schools will explore museum galleries, participate in performances by wheelchair and flamenco dancers, engage in demonstrations by community artists, and create art work of their own that ‘moves' through kinetic sculpture, wheelchair chalk drawings, straw paintings, and mobiles. Program partners include VSA arts of Florida, Hillsborough County School District, The Arts Council of Hillsborough County, TMA's Friends of the Arts, The Steinbrenner Foundation, and other community organizations.

EARTH DAY AT NATURE'S CLASSROOM - Saturday & Sunday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Join TMA at this weekend festival that celebrates nature and Hillsborough County's environment. Nature's Classroom is a 356-acre environmental studies program and learning laboratory set in Florida's natural environment. Since 1969 more than 328,000 sixth grade students from Hillsborough County public schools have experienced Nature's Classroom, located in Thonotosassa, FL. TMA provides a variety of hands-on activities.

ABOUT THE TAMPA MUSEUM OF ART

The new Tampa Museum of Art is under construction in downtown Tampa's Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. Its spectacular 66,000-square-foot Cornelia Corbett Center building is scheduled to open in late 2009. The museum will provide the region with a variety of world-class traveling exhibitions, a growing collection of contemporary and classical art, expanded educational programs and access to scenic outdoor events along Tampa's Riverwalk.
