Over the next few weeks, Florida Orchestra Music Director Stefan Sanderling will lead the orchestra in hallmark symphonies by Bruckner, Schumann and Brahms, all with soaring, powerful and passionate themes that are glorious affirmations as to why people continue to seek out live orchestral experiences.
Music Director Stefan Sanderling calls Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5 “the most well-crafted of all his symphonies." Considering Bruckner’s reputation as a pious man, some critics deem this work to be one of his most powerful and passionate declarations of faith. However, regardless of the listener’s beliefs, the music is emotionally compelling and moving with its massive dimensions, epic sweep and resounding brass choral-like surges. This Progress Energy Masterworks concert is Friday, April 3, at 8 p.m. at the Tampa Bay Performing Art Center’s Carol Morsani Hall in Tampa.
At the following Progress Energy Masterworks concert, Florida Orchestra Principal Oboist Katherine Young is the featured soloist in Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu’s Concerto for Oboe, with its lyrical and melodic songbird qualities. Stefan Sanderling conducts this program, which also includes Robert Schumann’s gorgeous Symphony No. 2 and Bedrich Smetana’s musical portrait of the meandering waters of The Moldau in his beloved Bohemia. This concert is April 18 and 19 in St. Petersburg and Clearwater.

Hailed by The Houston Chronicle for her “big sound, rich lyricism, and above all, compelling authority,” violinist Karen Gomyo returns to The Florida Orchestra to perform Dmitri Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1, with its contrasting dark brooding themes and lively spirited ones. Stefan Sanderling conducts this program, which also includes Brahms’ majestic and powerfully dramatic Symphony No. 3 and American composer Samuel Adler’s The Fixed Desire of the Human Heart, reflecting President Woodrow Wilson’s description of our collective desire for world peace. These concerts are May 1, 2 and 3 in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater.
To learn more about the music and composers featured on these programs, Stefan Sanderling offers animated and insightful pre-concert conversations in the hall one hour before curtain time. The Florida Orchestra regularly performs at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in Tampa, the Progress Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg, and Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. Single tickets for most concerts start at $19 for the general public and just $10 for students and educators.
