To the Editor:
I read with great interest your editorial about the oak trees
in Safety Harbor. By a wonderful synchronicity, I was looking at a design a
friend of mine had come up with to promote an event which we are holding at the
Safety Harbor Museum in September. The event is called Earthdance, part of a
world wide party for peace, community and the bringing together of cultures. The
theme for this year’s celebration is “The Wisdom of the Elders.” I decided to
use the oldest living member of our community as the focal symbol for our event:
the Baranoff Oak.
I have helped organize similar events for the last two years
down in Sarasota. To find out more about Earthdance go to www.Earthdance.org. To
learn more about our Sarasota Events go to www.SRQEarthdance.com.
Our Mistress of Ceremonies will be Chante Ishta who hosts the
Native American show “Two Worlds” every Sunday on WMNF 88.5 FM community radio.
I am a volunteer at the radio station and go by the name of Arth Mawr. I am
originally from Wales where the wisdom of the trees has been a cornerstone of
our culture since the dawn of time. I strongly believe that a community that
does not care for its natural surroundings will surely lose everything that
makes it a good place to live. If we have contempt for nature and despoil our
surrounding we will also lack compassion for people and ourselves. Are we
really prepared to sacrifice the beauty and tranquility of our wonderful town
on the altar of progress or to fill the pockets of a few opportunists? I think
not and I believe that Safety Harbor is special because its connection to
nature comes from its growth around the natural springs. I believe in progress
but one that is dedicated to the improvement of all and guided by the wisdom of
those who have seen the effects of misguided destruction.
Sincerely
