Clearwater residents Ray and Ellie Weaver recently
returned from a 14-day tour of France and provided this report to Tropical
Breeze: “After a short stay in Paris, we traveled on to the medieval town
of Beaune, where we enjoyed a visit to a winery and sampled the good cheeses
and wines. From there, we went to Lyon and Avignon to view the Papal Palace and
the famous bridge. In the next few days, we saw the casino at Monte Carlo and
the beautiful yachts anchored in Monaco. We shopped in the elegant boutiques at
St. Paul de Vence, a picturesque hillside town. Then on to the famous walled
city of Carcassonne, the best-preserved medieval city in the world and where “Robin,
Prince of Thieves” was filmed. Seeing the Basilica at Lourdes was an emotional
experience. Hundreds of people in wheelchairs were making their way to the
grotto of St. Bernadette, with assistance from army personnel from all over the
world. Countless people were gathering holy water from the spring and lighting
huge candles. After a visit to the Abbey of Mont St. Michael, we visited the
beaches of Normandy where we saw 9,000 crosses marking the gravesites of the
American boys who lost their lives there. This was in addition to the 14,000 young
men whose bodies were returned to their hometowns in the U.S. It was moving to
realize that so many lives had to be sacrificed so that we might enjoy a free
world. Finally, we returned to the city of the trees — Paris. After seeing the
many famous sites, we were treated to a thrilling nighttime event. For 10 minutes
every hour, the Eiffel Tower lights up with 4,000 twinkling lights — looking
like a giant sparkler. What a spectacular show! We urge everyone to line up
your own trip to France. The people there were so warm and friendly toward us. And
don’t forget to charge the battery in your camera and take those comfortable
shoes. The memories of the good food, the picturesque towns, famous sites and
lovely people will live with us for many years to come.”
