The Florida Orchestra’s October: From Classics To Classic Rock
By Henry Adams
Special to Tropical Breeze
The Florida Orchestra and Music Director Stefan Sanderling offer lots of variety and plenty of sizzle in October, including Masterworks concerts with music by Mozart, Shostakovich, Vivaldi, Stravinsky and Dvorak, a dance-themed morning Coffee Concert, five free Pops in the Park Concerts and a Pops concert of classic rock n’ roll.
The orchestra’s brass players are in the spotlight at the opening Progress Energy Masterworks concert with two works for brass choir by 16th-century composer Giovani Gabrieli. And orchestra trumpeters Robert Smith and Kenneth Brown perform Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Trumpets in C Major on a program that concludes with Shostakovich’s emotionally packed Symphony No. 7, Leningrad. Stefan Sanderling conducts these concerts on October 7 and 8 in St. Petersburg and Clearwater.
Associate Conductor Susan Haig will share fun and insightful comments about the music and composers at the first Westminster Communities of St. Petersburg Coffee Concert of the season, which features spirited dance rhythms by Bizet, Glinka, Strauss, Rimsky-Korsakov and more. Complimentary coffee and donuts will be served prior to this concert, which is 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 12 at the Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg.
Featured on the TV shows American Bandstand, Midnight Special and Happy Days and in the films American Grafitti and Apocalypse Now, Flash Cadillac joins the orchestra on the Raymond James Super Pops series with such classic rock n’ roll hits as Shake Rattle and Roll, Dancing in the Streets, Splish Splash, Pretty Woman, Jailhouse Rock, Donna and My Girl. Concerts are Oct. 19, 20 and 21 in Clearwater, Tampa and St. Petersburg, respectively. Susan Haig conducts.
