Thomas Edward Morris, Jr., 76, Safety Harbor, died August 29, 2006 at home. He moved to Jupiter in the 1970s from his native Philadelphia, and came to this area about 10 years ago. He was founder and president of T. E. Morris Associates, a company that specialized in placing electronics engineers with national and international firms. He was an avid sports fan, an amateur historian, and enjoyed horses. Survivors include four sisters, Isabel M. Rippert, Leesburg, VA, Katherine M. Voorhees, Venice, Ann M. Holliday , Bucks County, PA, and Judith M. Wells, Belleair Bluffs; and several nieces and nephews.

Barbara Hankin, 59, Safety Harbor, died September 1, 2006 at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. She was born in Detroit and came here in 2005 from Miami. She retired after 20 years as a major client service representative for ADP, an automatic data processing business in Detroit and Charlotte, NC. She attended Countryside Christian Center and was a member of American Contract Bridge League and the Fort Lauderdale and Clearwater Duplicate Bridge Clubs. She enjoyed swimming and gardening. Survivors include a daughter, Kate Smades, Safety Harbor; two sons, Don and Paul, both of South Gate, MI; a sister, Ann Genter, Ludington, MI; and a grandson.

J.D. Adams, 70, Safety Harbor, died September 2, 2006 at Mease Countryside Hospital. He came to Tampa in 1958 from his native Delphia, KY, and moved to Safety Harbor in 1961. He was a boat builder. He was a Marine Corps veteran. He enjoyed wood working and fishing. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Jane B.; two sons, David, Safety Harbor, and Robert, Loxahatchee; his mother, Emma Adams, Delphia; a brother, Bentley, Floyds Knobs , IN; and two sisters, Anna Killburn, Delphia, and LaVonna Snell, Paris, KY.

Pete Kinne, 43, Safety Harbor, died September 8, 2006 in Honolulu, HI. He was born in Patchogue, NY, came here in 1970, moved to California in 1983, and returned in 2000. He graduated from Countryside High School and worked for South Beach Labs in Largo. He was a studio musician, playing guitar, keyboards and drums, and played in several bands. He was also an artist and cartoonist. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed surfing and playing soccer. Survivors include his mother, Elaine B. Kinne, Clearwater; a brother, David, a sister, Beth Friederich, a nephew, Benjamin Kinne, and a niece, Rachael Friederich, all of Safety Harbor.

Eva Birkitt, 68, Safety Harbor, died September 9, 2006 at Mease Countryside Hospital. She was born in Philadelphia and came here in 1976 from Delaware. She was a homemaker. Survivors include two daughters, Olga Pepper, Dover, DE, and Linda Johnson, Easton, MD; a son, Mark Wooleyhand, Dover; a sister, Olga Fitch, Lewes, DE; and seven grandchildren.

Margaret Elizabeth Warren, 88, Safety Harbor, died September 9, 2006 at Mease Countryside Hospital. She came here in 1959 from her native Toronto and retired as secretary for St. Petersburg Yacht Club. She was Presbyterian and a longtime resident of Briar Creek Mobile Home Park. Survivors include two daughters, Joan Hunt, Palm Harbor, and Elizabeth Thorbin, Clearwater; a sister, Helen Da Foe-Graham, Toronto; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Dr. Manus A. Maltz, 87, Safety Harbor, died September 10, 2006 at Mease Countryside Hospital. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, and came here in 1981 from Poughkeepsie, NY. He retired after 40 years as a chiropractor and was a member of the National University of Health Sciences Alumni Association and the American Chiropractic Association. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a Mason and an Elk, a member of Ahavat Shalom Reform Temple and the Briar Creek II Social Club and a former member of Temple Beth-El. Survivors include his companion of 12 years, Miriam Sandler, Palm Harbor.


George L. Beckford, Sr., 84, Safety Harbor, died September 11, 2006 at home. He came here in 1957 from his native Kingston, Jamaica, and retired in 1992 from Pinellas County government, where he worked for the highway department. He was a former member of St. James AME Church, South Clearwater. Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Beckford, Safety Harbor; a son, George Jr., Apollo Beach; three stepdaughters; a stepson; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Billie Donald Frodge, 77, Safety Harbor, died September 11, 2006 at home. He was born in Maysville, KY, and came here in 1989 from Chalfont, PA. He served 16 years in the Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Moose and VFW. He enjoyed playing golf and shuffleboard, and watching professional football, basketball, and NASCAR racing. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Norma Louise; six daughters, Billie Jo Schott, Sandra Durden, LuAnn Blanton, Billie Dee Glacken, Barbara Rooks and Tina Lopez; three sons, David and Joseph Glacken and Michael Frodge Glacken; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Donald G. Ulrey, 92, Safety Harbor, died September 13, 2006 at Tandem Health Care of Safety Harbor. He was born in Indianapolis, and came here in 1984 from Englewood, FL. He worked 22 years as a police officer for the city of Indianapolis, and 10 years for American United Life Insurance Co. He was Protestant. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Retired Police Officers Association, Tampa Bay Masonic Lodge 252, Scottish Rite and Sahara Grotto. He was a 50 year member of the Murat Shriners. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Ava Jean; two sons, Don Jr., Avon, IN, and Rich, Anderson, IN; a stepson, Gerald Byers, Wilmington, DE; and two stepdaughters, Connie Byers, Dunedin, and Terri DuFrane, Englewood.

Norman S. Barnes, 77, Safety Harbor, died September 16, 2006 at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. He was born in Chicago and came here in 1985 from West Chester, OH. He was an irrigation consultant and was president of Irrigation Industries of Safety Harbor. He was Presbyterian, president of the Men’s Golf Association at Eagles Country Club in Odessa, and Chi Phi fraternity at University of Illinois. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Marilyn; three daughters, Dr. Jane E. Barnes, Raleigh, NC, and Elizabeth Barnes and Diane Bryant, both of Indianapolis; a brother, Blaine; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Natalie Fitzpatrick, 86, Safety Harbor, died September 19, 2006 at Tandem Health Care of Safety Harbor. She came here in 2004 from Stockton, NJ, and was a homemaker. Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Rudawsky, Safety Harbor; a son, David, New Jersey; two granddaughters, Beth, Safety Harbor, and Jennifer, New Jersey; and six great-grandchildren.

Warner R. Rice, 85, Safety Harbor, died September 21, 2006 at Mease Countryside Hospital. He was born in Winona, MO, and came here in 1981 from Springfield, MO. He was a furniture manufacturer and an Army veteran of World War II. He was Methodist. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Helen; and a daughter, Susan L. Rice, Safety Harbor.

Joseph M. Vecchitto, 89, Safety Harbor, died September 22, 2006 at Westchester Gardens Rehabilitation and Care Center, Clearwater. He came here in 1994 from his native Meriden, CT. He retired as a polisher for International Silver and was Catholic. Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Elizabeth Hendrix-Vecchitto; four daughters, Sandra DeGrandi, Berlin, CT, Pamela Pizzuti, Sun City, AZ, Linda Winn, Woodstock, CT, and Marianne Lutkehaus, Meriden; two brothers, Tommy and Tony, both of Meriden; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

John Kenneth Kirkirt, 77, Safety Harbor, died September 23, 2006 at Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater. He came here in 1995 from Laurence Harbor, NJ. He was a retired sheet metal mechanic and 50-year member of Metal Worker’s Local Union 27 in Farmingdale, NJ. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a former commander of VFW Post 6761 in New Jersey. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Edna; two sons, Ronald and Kenneth Scott, and a daughter, Judith; two brothers, Richard and Fred, and two sisters, Joan and Loretta, all of New Jersey; and two grandchildren.

Elsie Rosenberg, 97, Safety Harbor, died September 23, 2006 at Menorah Manor, St. Petersburg. She was born in Russia and came here in 1984 from Elmont, NY. She and her late husband owned and operated several Mom and Pop grocery stores in South Ozone, Brooklyn and Hollis, NY, which included the Little Giant Market. Survivors include two sons, Martin, Safety Harbor, and Bernard, Brooklyn, NY; a daughter, Laura Kalos, Dunedin; a half sister, Lillian Geiger, Fairlawn, NJ; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Virginia H. Shower, 92, of Clearwater, died September 25, 2006 at Palm Garden of Sun City Center. She was born in Green Cove Springs and was a lifetime area resident. She was the widow of Franklin Showers, longtime publisher of the Safety Harbor Herald, and operated the paper for a time after his death. He was the son of A.E. Showers, who purchased Tropical Breeze from A.G. Waldron in 1916, one year after its founding, and renamed it the Safety Harbor Herald. She retired from Safety Harbor Elementary School after 40 years as a school teacher. Her brother, Samuel Hendricks, was principal of the school in the early 1940s. She was Methodist and was a member of the Florida Retired Teachers Association, the Order of Eastern Star, the Business and Professional Women’s Association, the American Legion and several bridge clubs. She enjoyed traveling. Survivors include three daughters, Phyllis Shipley, Seminole, Cynthia Manuel, Wimauma, and Pamela Shower, St. Petersburg; a sister, Alice Gates, Dunedin; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Henry C. Howard, 85, Safety Harbor, died September 27, 2006 at Westchester Gardens Rehabilitation and Care Center, Clearwater. He was born in Atlanta, and came here in 1983 from McLean, VA. He retired from the Air Force as a colonel and was a veteran of World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a member and deacon of Skycrest Baptist Church of Clearwater and a life member of the Retired Officers Association, Washington, DC. He was an avid golfer and sportsman. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Burma; a daughter, Cheryl Knight, Bradenton; a son, Stephen, Stow, MA; a brother, Kenneth A., Dunwoody, GA; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

George Hudak, 79, of Clearwater, died September 27, 2006 at Morton Plant Hospital. He was born in Hungary, and came here from Yonkers, NY. He owned and operated Quality Sausage House for 20 years in Safety Harbor. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Margaret; two sons, George, Danbury, CT, and Frank, Yonkers, NY; a brother, Paul, Washington, DC; a sister, Ica Hudak, Hungary; and two grandchildren.

Vergia F. Zinck, 90, Safety Harbor, died September 28, 2006 at Comprehensive Healthcare of Clearwater. She was born in Mecosta, MI, and came here in 1959 from Boyne City, MI. She was a motel manager. She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church, Palm Harbor, and the Nazarine Church, Clearwater. Survivors include two daughters, Arlene Lambert, Safety Harbor, and Ruth Nathan, Chesaning, MI; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
