Safety Harbor Museum’s New Exhibit Is ‘Just Ducky’

Ducks will be landing at the Safety Harbor Museum of Regional History during its open house 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15. On display will be showcases containing beautiful hand-carved duck decoys along with the tools of the carvers. Flying above the cases will be 25 original duck prints accompanied with the appropriate State Hunting Stamps from the collection of George Weiss. This exhibit will continue until December 31.

In 1933 President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp Act, thereby establishing the Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp, or Duck Stamp as it is affectionately called. This Act was one of the first and most successful conservation programs in this nation’s history.

The first Federal Duck Stamp, designed by Jay “Ding” Darling in 1934, at President Roosevelt’s request, depicts two mallards about to land on a marsh pond. In subsequent years, other artists were asked to submit designs. The first contest was started in 1949 and was open to any U.S. artist who wished to enter. In the first year 88 design entries were submitted, since then the number of entries have risen into the thousands. This is the only art competition of its kind sponsored by the U.S. Government.

The Museum is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tues.-Fri.; 1-4 p.m. Sat.-Sun. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and teens, and children 12 and under are admitted free.
