Hector Mayoral Releases New Solo CD, ‘Monkish’

Hector Mayoral, a local musician who recently appeared in Safety Harbor at Earthdance and at the Wine Festival, has released a new solo CD, “Monkish.”

Mayoral perhaps is best known as singer/songwriter for the band “Acho Brother,” which was formed in 2002 in Orlando. The band started as a project to help Marvin Santiago, an ailing Puerto Rican Salsa singer. Santiago was fighting the effects of diabetes and was himself selling t-shirts online to gather financial support for a costly kidney transplant.

Acho Brother recorded “A Beneficio De Marvin Santiago,” which included a cover of one of Santiago's hits from the ’80s , “Vasos en Colores.” The idea was to donate a portion of sales to a fund for Santiago's recovery. Later in 2003 Santiago succumbed to diabetes-related complications and died in his native Puerto Rico.

“Marvin Santiago remains a major influence and my favorite Salsa singer of all time,” Mayoral said.

Mayoral moved to the Bay Area towards the end of 2003 to pursue another music project, “Red Tide,” and to collaborate with long-time friend Ray Olan and his group Jazzolé. Soon after, the creative juices started flowing and it was time to record again, he said. “Monkish” was the title of his next record to emphasize the minimal approach to the whole solo experience.

“I wanted to finally marry the acoustic guitar with the electronic sound,” Mayoral said.

“Monkish” was released in June 2006 and will be promoted “for the next year or so,” he said.
