Safety Harbor Obituaries

Constance P. Nelson, 81, Safety Harbor, died November 7, 2006 at Hospice House Woodside, Pinellas Park. She was born in Boston and came here in 1970 from Dolton, IL. She worked for the New York Yankees organization as a restaurant manager at Bay Harbor Inn, Tampa. She was a member of Heritage United Methodist Church at Countryside, Clearwater. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Bluhm, Safety Harbor; three sons, Bruce Mokate, San Antonio, TX, Michael Mokate, Snohomish, WA, and Steven Mokate, Garland, TX; and eight grandchildren.

Joseph Matthew Waranauckas, 73, Safety Harbor, died November 7, 2006 at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. He came here in 1984 from his native Detroit, where he retired after many years as a truck driver. Locally, he owned and operated a home repair service company. He was Catholic. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Carol A.; a son, Robert, Dunedin; a sister, Ann Dabner, Tempe, AZ; and a grandson.

Robert E. “Bob” Lee, 70, Safety Harbor, formerly of Clearwater, died November 8, 2006 at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. He was born in New London, CT, and moved to Pinellas County in 1982 from Fort Campbell, KY. He served 28 years in the Army as a helicopter pilot. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star and Meritorious Service Medal. He worked 16 years as a culinary instructor for Pinellas Technical Education Centers. He was a graduate of Austin Peay State University, Clarksville, TN. His memberships included American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Safety Harbor, Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association of Florida and American Culinary Federation. He was a past president and treasurer and was currently secretary of the Army Warrant Officers, Florida Sunshine Chapter 2006. He enjoyed cooking, reading, aviation and NASCAR. Survivors include his wife of five years, Ann; five children; six stepchildren; a sister, Barbara Makris, Goldvein, VA; a brother, Warren, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; several grandchildren; stepgrandchildren; great-grandchildren; and step-great-grandchildren.

Ollie W. Myers, 94, Safety Harbor, died November 11, 2006 in the home where she resided the past 45 years. She came to Safety Harbor with her mother and siblings in 1924 from her native Bolingbroke, GA. She worked many years as a cook at Barth’s Baths and Sanatorium, which was located just west of the Safety Harbor Spa. She also was housekeeper for a Safety Harbor couple until they passed away. She worked more than 25 years with her husband doing janitorial work at various offices, including the former Clearwater Sun building in downtown Clearwater. She was a member of St. Paul AME Church, Safety Harbor, where she served on the stewardess and deaconess boards, and she was a member of Goodloe Chapter 119 OES, Clearwater. Survivors include two daughters, Ruby L. Fort and Judy B. Myers, both of Safety Harbor; a son, Robert E. “Bobbie” Johnson Sr., South Bend, IN; a brother, Eugene Williams, and a sister, Florida Maxwell, both of South Bend, IN; 27 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and 61 great-great-grandchildren.

Arthur Barry Miles, 63, Safety Harbor, died November 12, 2006 at Largo Medical Center. He was born in Hackensack, NJ, and came here in 1974 from Long Island, NY. He retired as an aerosonics electronics trouble shooter for Raytheon. He attended Adelph Community College, Islip, NY, and Valley College, San Fernando, CA. He was Protestant and a member of Mutual UFO Network, and the United Auto Workers aerospace division. Survivors include his companion, Gina Radzinski, Safety Harbor; a son, Michael L., Patchogue, NY; his mother, Charlotte Elaine Miles, and a sister, Cheryl Grieco, both of Seminole; and a grandson.

Maurice R. Hatfield, 94, Safety Harbor, died November 14, 2006 at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. He was born in Hodgeston, ME, was a winter resident since 1947 from Somersworth, NH, and moved here in 2000. He was a retired land development contractor, worked seasonally at the former Pinellas Lumber Co. and retired in 1996 from the Safety Harbor Spa. He raced standard bred trotter and pacer horses. He was Methodist and a member of Kiwanis Club of Somersworth. Survivors include a son, Richard, Palm Harbor; a sister, Betty Worthen, Ellsworth, ME; a grandson, Richard II, Atlanta; and two great-grandchildren.

Basil Nation, 73, a winter resident of Safety Harbor, died November 18, 2006 at his summer home in Jamaica. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and came here seasonally from Jamaica. He was a retired mechanical engineer. Survivors include six daughters, Aletha Beyer, Desrine Nation, Raquel Russell, all of Safety Harbor, Christine Nation, Morris, PA, Ionie Nation, Spanish Town, Jamaica, and Angela Barrett, Kingston; several brothers and sisters; and 16 grandchildren.

Doris Bollinger, 83, Safety Harbor, died November 20, 2006 at Lexington Health Care & Rehabilitation, St. Petersburg. She was born in Brooklyn, NY, and came here in 1979 from Riverhead, NY. She was a homemaker and Protestant. Survivors include a son, Scott Hansen, Clearwater; and a sister, June C. Cooke, Gainesville.

Jeanne Ruth Pontius, 78, of Lancaster, OH, a winter resident of Safety Harbor, died November 21, 2006 at her son’s home in Mason, OH. Survivors include two sons, Gregg, Lancaster, and Scott, Mason; two stepsisters, Marie Reynolds, Brownsburg, IN, and Marilyn Yingling, Amanda, OH; and five grandchildren, Billy, Deanna, Dianna, Mallory and Kellen.

Cameryn L. Krol, 41, of Macomb Township, MI, formerly of Safety Harbor, died November 22, 2006 in Utica, MI. She was born in Detroit, and came here in 1992 from Bradford Township, MI, and moved to Macomb Township in 1998 from Safety Harbor. She was an office manager at Sink Rite Die Co., Macomb Township. She was Methodist. She was artistic and creative and a gifted cook and gardener. She enjoyed animals. Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Dawn M. and Emmett H. Webb, Safety Harbor; her father, Joseph A. Krol, Benton Harbor, MI; a sister, Candace N. Krol, Altadena, CA; her grandmother, Georgine J. Curran, Clearwater; and a companion, Joseph W. Cottrell, Michigan.

Frank Pecchio, 81, Safety Harbor, died November 23, 2006 at Westchester Gardens Rehabilitation & Care Center, Clearwater. He was born in Flushing, NY, and came here in 1981 from Mount Vernon, NY. He worked 50 years as a technician for Cookson Precious Metals Co. He was a Navy veteran and a member of the Italian-American Club of Greater Clearwater. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Corinda “Rindy;” a brother, Carl, Naples, FL; two sisters, Nancy Vigliarola, Hamilton Square, NJ, and Rose Maselli, Clearwater; and many nieces and nephews.

Loretta Rybak, 90, Safety Harbor, died November 24, 2006 at Mease Countryside Hospital, Safety Harbor. She came here in 1981 from her native Chicago and was a homemaker. She was a member of Espiritu Santo Catholic Church, Espiritu Santo Council 2474 Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and the Over 55 Club, all of Safety Harbor. Survivors include three nephews, one niece; seven grandnieces and grandnephews and eight great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.
