Reader Offers New Year Resolutions
To the Editor:
The time for New Year Resolutions is upon us and I believe we as a society have some deep soul searching to do before deciding on the usual diet and stop smoking resolutions.
We seem to have lost respect for one another and fail to realize that whatever we do and whatever choices and decisions we make in life will in some way effect others. Here’s a few things to ponder before making resolutions…
When driving, do you stop at traffic lights and stop signs or do you run through them without thinking of the consequences to others?
While stopped at an intersection waiting for the light, do you seize the opportunity to empty your ashtray on the street or throw your trash out the window onto the street with no regard for the environment?
Do you speed, and steer the car with your knees while putting on makeup or punch in the numbers on the cell phone or engage in other distractive driving practices whereby placing the health, safety and well-being of others in jeopardy?
Do you walk Fido and leave behind excrement without picking it up without regard to your neighbor’s right to a clean and healthy environment?
Do you play your car radio or stereo equipment at home so loud without considering that others may not enjoy your type of music and may be disturbed by it?
We seemed to have forgotten that life is not just about me, myself and I, but it’s about treating others with respect and dignity under the old Golden Rule “Do Unto Others As You Would Have Others Do Unto You.”
So as we consider our New Year Resolutions, let us think of the simple things we can do to show respect for one another in the coming New Year in the hope of achieving “Peace On Earth and Goodwill Toward Men” by simply “Loving Thy Neighbor As Thyself.”
A Happy New Year To All.
