‘Corn Dogs' Are Starving While They're Getting Fat
Dear Nanny Fran,
What is your New Year’s resolution?
I resolve to maintain excellent health for me and all my
children. I also resolve to meet Cesar Milan! He and I spend a
tremendous amount of time together. I believe that you pay attention to
the best people in a given field.
I resolve to educate everyone about anything and
everything that concerns their pets in order to maintain excellent
health so that they are with us for many, many wonderful years.
Exercise, discipline and affection in that order. Yes, exercise, discipline and then affection. I would say that exercise is number two in my world. Number one in my world is excellent nutrition to create and maintain excellent health.
I am so tired of clients feeding nutritionally deficient diets to their pets and then when the pet becomes chubby they cut back on the nutritionally deficient “food” that I would never purchase and would throw into the garbage can instantly if someone handed it to me free!
Yes, indeed, in a heartbeat! Why? Because we have a nation of “corn dogs”! Corn? Yes! Where is the corn? In the dog and cat foods and the animals are starving and putting on pounds from the carbohydrates. Cats with a lifelong diet of dry food become diabetic or have kidney failure, hepatic lipidosis and several other conditions. Feeding a cat strictly dry food is animal abuse in my opinion. Illnesses are being created, life spans are being shortened and then when diabetes or kidney failure does arrive then many owners will simply “put them down” and go get another one.
The poor “corn dogs.” They are starving for quality protein and they are being “filled up” with corn, wheat, ground peanut hulls… yes, ground peanut hulls! I read the ingredients on a bag of veterinarian-recommended food. I’m sick of hearing that “dogs will eat anything.” Of course they will… they are starving for real food. I grew up in the corn and wheat fields of Indiana. I ran and walked through those fields for years with my cats and dogs. Not once did I ever see a dog or cat eating corn or wheat. Not once.

Don’t let him be a “corn dog.” Check the ingredients on that inexpensive pet food and understand your pet’s health may be at risk.

Poor diets create skin and coat problems. Then Omega 3
fatty acids are poured onto their “corn food.” Bags of supplements with
multiple vitamins, minerals, probiotics, on and on and on are sold to
put on the “corn food” to make it nutritionally complete. If the food
were actually the proper diet for the dog, the Omega 3s and additional
vitamins and minerals would not be needed. Corn, wheat, sugar and other
“wicked items” are in dog treats. Don’t argue with me… read the labels
yourself. I’ve read labels on dog and cat foods and treats until I
nearly need glasses!
I believe the New Year’s resolution for everyone should
be achieving and maintaining excellent health for themselves and their
dogs and cats. Diet is everything. Excellent health is priceless!
Please walk your dog at least TWICE PER DAY. I do not
care if you have fenced acreage. Many, many wonderful things are
accomplished when you walk your dog. Not only wonderful, but important
to the physical health and emotional health of you and your dog.
