Florida Orchestra Receives $1 Million Gift
Prominent Tampa business leaders and philanthropists John and Susan Sykes have given more than $1 million to The Florida Orchestra. One million dollars is for immediate use in the Orchestra’s general operating budget, and a smaller portion, $163,000 will be safeguarded in the Orchestras endowment fund. The gift comes through the John H. Sykes Foundation, Inc.
In addition to its generous gift, the Sykes Foundation has issued a challenge to the Tampa Bay community to help the Orchestra raise an additional $1 million. “The Florida Orchestra is a major cultural and educational force in Tampa Bay, and we are proud to make this contribution,” said Susan Sykes, president of the foundation. “We hope this action inspires others to join in and match this gift.”
Leonard D. Stones, the orchestra’s executive director, said, “The potential to realize a total of $2 million or more based on the Sykes Foundation’s generosity leaves me speechless.”
The Orchestra is embarking on a campaign that will give the community a chance to collectively equal the Sykes gift.
