Magdalen “Madge” Simmes, 89, Safety Harbor, died June 1, 2006 at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. Born in Jamestown, NY, she came here in 1989 from Lakewood, NY. She and her husband owned and managed restaurants in Jamestown, and she was a real estate agent. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lakewood, and enjoyed gardening. Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Donald; a son, Roald Grodevant, Sarasota; a daughter, Joan Erickson, Garner, NC; a stepson, Stephen Simmes, Tucson, AZ; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

William Lee Ashe, 85, Safety Harbor, died June 4, 2006 at Hospice House Woodside, Pinellas Park. He was a lifelong resident, attended Pinellas County schools, traveled extensively throughout the state, then settled in New York City, and when he retired he returned to Safety Harbor. He was a barber and earned a barber’s license and cosmetology certificate from Moler Barber College. Locally, he was a volunteer for more than 10 years at Countryside High School. He was a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Tarpon Springs, where he was a volunteer in the brotherhood and youth departments. He was a Master Mason and member of Antioch Lodge 66, F&AM. He was named the Nubian King by the Safety Harbor African American Alliance in 1999. Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Barbara; two daughters, Mary Ashe, Jacksonville, and Michele Rodriguez, Royersford, PA; his caregivers, Louise Battle and Tereceta Jones, both of Safety Harbor, and Beatrice Williams, Clearwater; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Gary Dean Patterson, 67, Safety Harbor, died June 6, 2006 at Mease Countryside Hospital. He was born in Washington, IN, and came here around 1986 from Kokomo, IN. He worked as a security guard for Weiser Security Services. Survivors include a daughter, Christine Renee Wonder, Oviedo; a son, Clark Allen Patterson, Princeton, IN; a sister, Shelby Jean Forgey, Logansport, IN; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Willard R. Maybee, 90, Safety Harbor, died June 12, 2006 at Palm Garden of Clearwater nursing home. He was born in Fine, NY, and came here in 1977 from New York. He retired as a foreman after 34 years with LTV Steel Co., Star Lake, NY. He was a life member of Masonic Lodge 687 and a past master of Subordinate Grange, both of New York, and a member of the New York State Assessment Assistants. He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, boating and hunting. Survivors include his wife of 66 years Maisie M.; a daughter, Brenda J. Rothwell, Safety Harbor; a son, Phillip I., Ortonville, MI; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three nieces.

Michael Scott Howard, 49, Safety Harbor, died June 14, 2006 at home. He was born in Bloomington, IN, and came here in 1976 from New Jersey. He received his law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law, where he was selected for the Order of the Coif. He graduated cum laude from Florida State University, where he earned a master’s degree as well as a bachelor’s degree, and was class valedictorian. He was licensed to practice law in Florida, New Jersey and the District of Columbia. He was a Navy veteran and member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Fraternity. Survivors include his father, Robert; his mother, Beverly Cannon; three brothers, Christopher Howard, Jesse and Tim Tremaine; and four sisters, Amanda Aguilar, Diane Dugan, Kelly and Lisa Tremaine.

Stella Lee Sakowski, 86, of New Port Richey and formerly of Safety Harbor, died June 15, 2006 at home. She was born in Charleston, WV, came to Dunedin in 1976 from Maryland, moved in 1980 to Safety Harbor and then moved in 2004 to New Port Richey. She was a retired clothing store manager and worked at the Athens Restaurant and Whistle Stop Ice Cream, both in Safety Harbor. She attended Cypress Meadows Community Church in Clearwater and Spirit of Life Metropolitan Community Church in New Port Richey. Survivors include a son, Dean Max, Holiday; four daughters, Terry Jones, Palm Harbor, and Maxine Battaglini, New Port Richey, Mary Lee Sirochman, Safety Harbor, and Marlene Debra Mitchell, Oldsmar; a brother, Paul D. Johnson, Toms River, NJ; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Howard B. Bittner, 85, Safety Harbor, died June 16, 2006 at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. He was born in Chicago and came here in 1980 from Palatine, IL, where he retired as a sales engineer after 38 years with GTE. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree from the University of Chicago. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Espiritu Santo Catholic Church, Safety Harbor, the Sertoma Club of Clearwater and Telephone Pioneers of America. He enjoyed fishing and investing. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Helen; two sons, Michael, Hilton Head, SC, and Jack, Hoffman Estates, IL; two daughters, Irene Cauwels and Jean Brandt, both of Palatine; three brothers, Robert, Bradenton, Daniel, Libertyville, IL, and Norman, St. Louis; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Mona M. Kinnison, 76, Safety Harbor, died June 17, 2006 at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. She was born in Union Furnace, OH, and came here in 1978 from Kinsman, OH. She was a member of VFW Post 10093 Auxiliary, Safety Harbor. Survivors include two sons, William E. “Bill,” and Michael, both of Safety Harbor; two daughters, Shirley Louk, Bristolville, OH, and Dianna White, Charleston, SC; a sister, Mary Ann Goss, Logan, OH; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Madeline Mary Gazda, 83, Safety Harbor, died June 18, 2006 at Mease Countryside Hospital, Safety Harbor. She was born in Detroit and came here in 1984 from Texas. She retired as a head teller after 25 years with Security Bank of Michigan. For several years she was a volunteer on committees and fundraisers at Briar Creek Phase II and enjoyed sewing, playing pinochle and doing arts and crafts. She was Catholic. Survivors include her husband, Joseph; a daughter, Sandra Kritch, Clearwater; a son, Ronald, Richardson, TX; two grandchildren, Karey Kritch, Oldsmar, and Kale Kritch, Tampa; and a great-granddaughter.

Shirley Ann Monda, 71, Safety Harbor, died June 22, 2006 at Tandem Health Care of Safety Harbor. She was born in Ashtabula, OH, and came here several years ago from Ohio. She worked as a clerk for a telephone company. Survivors include her husband, Samuel; and a daughter, Diana Rostan, Clearwater.

Mary C. Miller, 86, Safety Harbor, died June 24, 2006 at Tandem Health Care, Safety Harbor. She came here in 1974 from her native Cleveland. She was an administrator in the medical equipment industry and was Roman Catholic.

John Steel, 84, Safety Harbor, died June 25, 2006 at home. He was born in Scotland and came here in 1984 from Hopedale, MA, where he retired as a foreman for General Motors. He was a Jehovah’s Witness and a freemason in Scotland. Survivors include his wife, Jemima; two sons, Alexander, Safety Harbor, and Adam, Oldsmar; six grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.

Jonathan Paul Bure, 60, Safety Harbor, formerly of Largo, died June 27, 2006 at Mease Countryside Hospital, Safety Harbor. He came to Largo in 1959 from his native Buffalo, NY, and moved in 1972 to Safety Harbor. He worked as a service adviser for 26 years with Stone Buick and was an Army National Guard veteran. He was Baptist. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Hazel; two sons, Jamie Phillip, Dunedin, and Johnny Paul, Tampa; two sisters, Judith Lapp, Dunnellon, and Pat Stocker, Hilo, HI; and four granddchildren.

Clara Catherine Newton, 93, Safety Harbor, died June 27, 2006 at home. She was born in Hofa Park, WI, and came here in 2001 from Baltimore. She was a member of Espiritu Santo Catholic Church, Safety Harbor. Survivors include a brother, Richard Adamski, Hofa Park; three sisters, Alvina Adamski, Greenfield, WI, Isabel Ebert, Milwaukee, and Beatrice Radliff, Kearney, NE; several nieces and nephews, including Joseph LeGath, Safety Harbor; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Barbara Jean Sturdivant Sconyers, 75, Safety Harbor, died June 28, 2006 at home under the care of the Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. She was born in Nashville and came here in 1954 from Memphis. She worked 15 years in the engineering department for the city of Safety Harbor and previously worked for Sears, Roebuck and Co. in Nashville. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Safety Harbor. She enjoyed traveling and was a member of the Mid Florida Happy Campers RV Club. Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Roscoe; two sons, John, Hilton Head Island, SC, and Daryl, Mentor, OH; a daughter, Marla Sconyers Moore, Memphis; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
