Susan D. Guarnieri, 70, Safety Harbor,
died March 31, 2007 at home under the care of Hospice of the
Florida Suncoast. She was born in Springfield, MA, and came here in
2000 from Agawan, MA. She worked for the Federal Reserve as a bank
supervisor. She was Catholic. Survivors include her husband of 50
years, Raymond A.; three sons, Tom, Southwyck, MA, Mark, Safety
Harbor, and Tim, San Jose, CA; a sister Patricia Leonard, Safety
Harbor; and six grandchildren.
Ronald G. “Ron” Cooke, 56,
Safety Harbor, died April 4, 2007 at Mease Countryside hospital,
Safety Harbor. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica and moved here in
1984 from Miami. He owned and operated Agape Communications, Safety
Harbor. He was a deacon at the First Baptist Church, Safety Harbor
and a member of the Safety Harbor Neighborhood Family Center.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, June C. Cooke; a son, Ron
G. II, Oldsmar; his father and stepmother, Leslie and Inez Cooke,
Miami; and four sisters, Myrna Sims, Hollywood, FL, Angella Cooke
and Marlene Evitt, both of Fort Lauderdale and Ingrid Dixon,
Boynton Beach.
Mildred I. Miller, 91, Safety Harbor, died
April 5, 2007 at Mease Countryside Hospital. She was born in
Ashley, OH, and came here in 1990 from Orlando. She was a
homemaker. Survivors include a son, Dale Redmon, Palm Harbor; two
daughters, Christine Hinkle, Allentown, PA, and Constance Geimont,
Chuluota, FL; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Mark G. Reed, 53, Safety Harbor, died
April 5, 2007 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center from injuries
suffered in an industrial accident. He was born November 24, 1953
in Newport, RI, and moved to Safety Harbor in 1959 at the age of
five. He attended local schools and was the owner and operator for
18 years of MR Welding and Fabrication, specializing in citrus
processing machinery. Prior to that he worked for Gulf Machinery
Co., Safety Harbor. He was a member of Espiritu Santo Catholic
Church, Safety Harbor. He was an avid fan of Bob Dylan, George
Jones, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He enjoyed traveling,
listening to reggae music, cooking, and creating metal sculptures.
He loved to gather and celebrate with his family and friends. He
was a kind-hearted person who always saw the positive side in
everything, and loved helping people. Survivors include his wife of
19 years, Christina; two sons, Dylan and Austin; his parents,
George and Helen; four brothers, George Jr., Ronald, Justin, and
Cory; a sister, Carolyn Kuhn; and many nieces and nephews.
Rose Oremland, 91, Safety Harbor, died
April 6, 2007 at home. She was born in Great Barrington, MA, and
came here in 2004 from West Palm Beach. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Richard, Safety Harbor, and George,
Jupiter; a daughter, Lois Hornick, Manhasset, NY; six
grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
William A. Alford, 87, Safety Harbor, died
April 10, 2007 at Mease Countryside Hospital. Born November 9, 1919
in Branford, FL, he moved to Winter Haven in the mid-1940s, then
briefly to Clearwater before coming to Safety Harbor where he lived
for most of his life. He was a painter and independent contractor.
He was a member of Countryside Cathedral and charter member of the
Church of God, both of Safety Harbor. He enjoyed making casting
nets, fishing and gardening, especially taking care of his rose
garden. He was a devoted Christian who loved to read the Bible.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mary; two sons, Jack
Edward, Safety Harbor, and Billy Jean; three grandchildren, William
Edward, Felicia Ann and Michael David; two great-grandchildren,
William Tyler and Steven; and several nieces and nephews.
Jim “Big Jim” Merrill, 67,
Safety Harbor, died April 10, 2007 at home under the care of
Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. He was born in Robertson County,
KY, and came here in 1979 from Mount Olivet, KY. He owned and
operated Jim’s Pressure Cleaning and Mobile Home Service for
34 years in Safety Harbor. Survivors include a daughter, Teresa
Anderson, Mount Olivet; his mother, Stella Merrill, Brooksville,
KY; a sister, Connie Fair, Brooksville; many nieces and nephews;
two grandchildren; and a companion, Carol Papp, Safety Harbor.
Harold P. Wood, 44, Safety Harbor, died
April 11, 2007 at Mease Countryside Hospital. He was born in
Nashua, N.H., and came here in 1982 from Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
Survivors include his father, William, Safety Harbor; three
brothers, William Jr., Port Richey, Robert, St. Petersburg, and
James, New Port Richey; and a sister, Dolores Wood, Miami.
Eugene Carter, Jr., 24, of Clearwater,
died April 12, 2007 at Mease Dunedin Hospital. He was born in
Clearwater and was a lifelong resident. He worked in maintenance at
a restaurant. He was a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist
Church, Safety Harbor. Survivors include his father, Eugene Carter
Sr., Safety Harbor; his mother, Linda Waller, Clearwater; a
daughter, Zyannia Carter, Clearwater; a sister, Dawndalyn Waller,
Clearwater; paternal grandparents, Edward and Queen Hodge, Safety
Harbor; and maternal grandparents, Willie Fred and Delois Moody,
Safety Harbor.
Charles R. Madlinger, 86, Safety Harbor,
died April 13, 2007 at Mease Countryside Hospital. He was born in
Brooklyn, NY, and came here in 1965 from New York. He was a handler
in the banking industry. He was a graduate of New York Institute of
Photography. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors
include his wife, Gloria; a sister, Anne Borkhuis, a niece, Diane
Moore, and a grandnephew, Michael Moore, all of Brooklyn.
Paulette D. Zbikowski, 60, Safety Harbor,
died April 13, 2007 at home under the care of Hospice of the
Florida Suncoast. She was born July 23, 1946 in Cleveland and came
here in 2000. She worked five years at Mease Countryside Hospital.
She was Catholic and attended St. Michael’s Shrine, Tarpon
Springs. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of American
Legion Post 238. Survivors include her husband of 37 years, Thomas;
three sons, Chris, Palm Harbor, Tommy, Panama City, and Timothy,
McDonough, GA; three daughters, Toni Merrill, Palm Harbor, Tina
Cieker, Brunswick, OH, and Tammy Sheets, Strongsville, OH; a
brother, Paul Pell, Cleveland; two sisters, Diane Dufek, Hinckley,
OH, and Colleen Mosley, Cleveland; 16 grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
Cheryl “Jean” Ragland, 57,
Safety Harbor, died April 19, 2007 at Mease Countryside Hospital.
She came here in 1974 from her native Hannibal, MO. She collected
and sold antiques and was a musician. She enjoyed gardening and
reading. Survivors include a daughter, Allison R. Gorrell, Safety
Harbor; three sisters, Janice Baker and Catrine Harris, both of
Hannibal, and Jacque DeAbreu, Concord, CA; and two grandchildren,
Timothy and Brett Gorrell, both of Safety Harbor.
Cynthia L. Patterson, 63, of New Port
Richey, formerly of Safety Harbor, died April 19, 2007 in New Port
Richey. Born in New Haven, CT, she moved in 1988 to Safety Harbor
from Connecticut then in 2003 moved to New Port Richey. She was a
retired certified nurse’s assistant and was Catholic. She
enjoyed reading. Survivors include a son, Arthur, and daughter,
Stacey Steigerwaldt, both of New Port Richey; a sister, Mary
Gronko, Colorado Springs, CO; a brother, John Asmus, Sutter Creek,
CA; and a step-grandchild.
Luis Gomez-Mesa, 69, Safety Harbor, died
April 20, 2007 at Kindred Hospital-Central Tampa. Born November 28.
1937 in Mina Carlota, Cuba, he left Cuba for Madrid, Spain in 1970.
In 1973 he moved to Miami to give his family the opportunity to
have freedom of choice. His 24-year profession as a chemical
engineer in the pulp and paper industry took him to Perry, FL,
Mississippi and Arkansas. He came here in 1998 after retiring from
International Paper Co. He was Catholic and proud of earning
American citizenship. He was a member of the Lions Club. He had a
passion for music and enjoyed singing, dancing and playing the
Spanish guitar. He also enjoyed reading, playing golf and cooking.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Elouise; a son, Luis Jr.,
Folly Beach, SC; a daughter, Laura Maria Gomez, Atlanta; two
stepsons, Shannon Culpepper, Odessa, and Jason Culpepper, Safety
Harbor; and three grandchildren, Christian Culpepper, Caitlyn
Culpepper and Cade Culpepper.
Dolly Salvato, 83, Safety Harbor, died
April 22, 2007 at Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater. She was born
August 3, 1923 in Lakeland and moved here in 1983 from Spring
Valley, NY. She was an active member of Countryside Baptist Church,
Clearwater, and was a supporter of the Kids Alley Program, Camden,
NJ. She enjoyed gardening and traveling. When home, she enjoyed
exploring Safety Harbor by taking long walks. Survivors include her
husband of 20 years, Dale Eder; a daughter, Barbara Vilord,
Turnersville, NJ; a brother, Burton Phillips, Titusville; a sister,
Robbie Neuman, Brandon; three grandchildren, Darcy, Kimberly and
Thomas, all of NJ; and five great-grandchildren.
