The Safety Harbor Garden Club was honored
by the Safety Harbor City Commission on Monday, June 4, at its
regular meeting. Mayor Andy Steingold presented a plaque to Marilyn
Mabe, president of the club, in recognition and gratitude for the
effort and contribution toward the city’s
“entryway” beautification projects.
Garden club members, in conjunction with
the city, have upgraded the entryway signs at Main Street and
McMullen Booth Road. Robelini palms were added to flank the
signs on each side. Bromeliads, angel wing begonias and
other flowering plants have been circled with a landscaping border
of stones. The signs on South Bayshore Drive and beside the library
on Phillipe Parkway have been similarly landscaped. Joe and
Sue Cassie and Denis Romero were credited with the hard
work.
Another project club members have
undertaken is beautification of the grounds at the Safety Harbor
Museum of Regional History on South Bayshore Drive. Members have
removed underbrush on the grounds, cleaned up and thinned out
bromeliads, replanting the bromeliads in the borders beside the
museum building, and pruned existing plants. Large planters with
begonias and ivy have been placed at the walkway
entrance and planters with petunias and small palms trees at
the front door. Beautification of the museum grounds has
been selected as an ongoing project by the members. Work has been
suspended during the hot weather and will begin again in the fall.
Members will continue to water and maintain the new plantings.
The club meets the third Wednesday monthly
at 9:30 a.m. at the Safety Harbor Library. Visitors are welcome.
Dues are $15 a year and entitle members to participate in all club
activities, including trips, tours and socials.
