The Florida Department of Environmental
Protection (DEP), together with the Clean Boating Partnership, has
recognized Cocoa Village Marina as Florida’s newest
“Clean Marina.”
“Florida’s more than 130 Clean
Marinas play an important role in preserving our waterways,”
said Vivian Garfein, director of DEP’s Central District.
“Environmentally-friendly amenities reduce costs for the
marine industry and offer simple alternatives for boaters while
protecting the state’s natural resources.”
To receive the Clean Marina designation,
Cocoa Village Marina adopted safeguards that prevent pollutants
from entering Indian River. The 117-slip full service marina
provides pump-out services, installed recycling bins to encourage
boaters to recycle, posted signs that educate boaters on sensitive
aquatic wildlife and distributes bilge socks to boaters, an
absorption device placed in boats to collect excess gas and
oil.
The Clean Boating Partnership includes the
DEP, marina and boatyard owners and operators, Marine Industries
Association of Florida, Florida Sea Grant Program and the U.S.
Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary. Providing
‘green’ education and alternatives helps ensure a
sustainable future for the environment and the billion-dollar
marine industry.
