The Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art has
announced the winners in “An Artistic Discovery: The 26th
Annual Congressional High School Art Competition.”
First launched in 1982, the annual
Congressional High School Art Competition is coordinated by members
of the U.S. Congress and by Congressman Gus M. Bilirakis locally. A
national exhibition of the winning art is in Washington, D.C. and
represents Congressional Districts across the country. To date,
more than 650,000 high school students have competed in about 4,000
local contests.
The exhibition at the Leepa-Rattner Museum
of Art displayed work from art students in grades 9-12 from the 9th
Congressional District. The artwork winning Best of Show will
travel to Washington, D.C. to be displayed with other congressional
district winners for one year in the Cannon Tunnel leading to the
U.S. Capitol.
Melissa Miller Nece, colored pencil artist
and signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America and
art instructor at the Dunedin Fine Art Center judged this
year’s competition.
Cash awards for the exhibition winners
were provided by ArtistsRegistry.com, Sonja and Gus Stefanadis and
the Florida Watercolor Society. Framing for the Best of Show was
done by Carole Rosefelt Studios; Southwest Airlines is providing
two tickets for the Best of Show winner and a guardian to attend
the ribbon cutting ceremony at the Cannon Tunnel on June 26; and
Tropical Breeze was the media sponsor.
