The Tampa Museum of Art board of trustees
unanimously approved the building committee’s recommendation
to endorse architect Stanley Saitowitz’s design direction and
phased approach to build the new Tampa Museum of Art.
“Endorsement by the board brings us
one step closer to realizing our vision of creating a new
Tampa Museum of Art for the entire community to experience and
enjoy,” said Cornelia Corbett, chairman of the
board. Saitowitz unveiled the preliminary design renderings of
the new museum, which will be located in Curtis Hixon Park in
downtown Tampa, at the May 10 board building committee
meeting.
Funding for the new facility will come
from both the public and private sectors of the community. The
City of Tampa has allocated $18.5 million of Community Investment
Tax Funds for the new museum facility and demolition of the
existing building. Additional monies are being generated by the
museum through a capital fundraising initiative. Site work on the
new museum is expected to begin in December of this
year.
The Tampa Museum of Art is celebrating its
28th season, having opened its doors in 1979.
The museum is a proud culmination of
almost three decades of cooperation among art
organizations, private citizens and government agencies in Tampa
and Hillsborough County.
The Tampa Museum of Art is dedicated
to advancing the visual arts through exhibitions and
education programs for the broadest possible audience. The Tampa
Museum of Art’s primary purpose is to collect,
preserve, display and interpret works of art, reflecting art forms
of regional, national and international
importance.
