Ruth is a care receiver with Faith in
Action of Upper Pinellas (FIA). She has been since June 2004. She
suffers from chronic arthritis in addition to severe heart and lung
problems. There are days when she cannot even get out of bed. Ruth
is only 53 years old.
She lives only about a mile from the
nearest grocery store; however, even on her best days it would take
her over an hour to walk to the store. When she’s up to it,
FIA provides Ruth with transportation for grocery shopping, said
Joe Sutsko, executive director of FIA.
“We provide this weekly service to
Ruth and up to 10 other area people in need of basic
transportation,” Sutsko said. “Our volunteers drive a
van provided by Neighborly Care Network. Some of our shoppers go to
Albertson’s and others to Publix. On occasion, a special trip
is planned to a Wal-Mart Super Store. This gives our passengers the
opportunity to shop for other items in addition to groceries.
“We desperately need one or more
drivers for our weekly food van. If we could get two or more
volunteers they could alternate weeks so that one person would not
have to commit to the five to six hours needed every week. The only
requirements are a clean driving record, physically able to help
people with their groceries on and off the bus and a caring
heart,” he said.
