The Florida Orchestra and Music Director
Stefan Sanderling will treat audiences to a dynamic mix of music
this month: all five Beethoven piano concertos, Bruckner's
monumental Symphony No. 8, and guest conductor Stanislaw
Skrowaczewski in a program of works by Vivaldi and Beethoven, along
with Skrowaczewski's own "Concerto for Orchestra." Plus, pianist
extraordinaire Roger Williams is featured on the pops series, and
the orchestra and three choirs will conjure up a magical experience
with "The Lord of the Rings Symphony."
Beethoven fans have a special treat with
multi-award winning German pianist Peter Rosel performing all five
Beethoven piano concertos over two nights: Piano Concertos Nos. 2,
3 and 4 at Morsani Hall at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in
Tampa on Friday, Feb. 16; and Piano Concerto No's. 1 and 5 at the
Mahaffey Theater at the Progress Energy Center in St. Petersburg on
Saturday, Feb. 17. Stefan Sanderling conducts both concerts, which
start at 8 p.m.
For music lovers who enjoy the big
orchestral works, the next few weeks are overflowing with them.
Stefan Sanderling conducts Bruckners Symphony No. 8, which he says
is very spiritual and very emotional, adding, "It has a huge,
massive sound, a very uplifting sound, an almost overwhelming
sound. This is music that you need to just let happen to you."
These concerts are February 9, 10 and 11 in Tampa, St. Petersburg
and Clearwater, respectively.
For a different large symphonic sound, the
orchestra performs Howard Shore's musical fantasy "The Lord of the
Rings Symphony," which showcases music from the epic Lord of the
Rings film trilogy. Shore has produced numerous film scores,
including music for David Cronenberg and Martin Scorsese, but "The
Lord of the Rings Symphony" stands as his most towering achievement
to date with the trilogy's three Oscars, four Grammy Awards and
two Golden Globes. With fantastic illustrations projected above the
orchestra, this concert features three choirs as well: USF Chamber
Singers, Clearwater Christian Chorale and Florida Boychoir.
This exclusive Florida engagement is two
nights only, Feb. 21 and 22 at the Mahaffey Theater at the Progress
Energy Center in St. Petersburg. Concerts start at 8 p.m. with
half-priced tickets for children under 12.
