Heset Xhokli and his children, refugees
from Kosovo, in January moved into a newly constructed Habitat for
Humanity home built on land provided by the City of Safety Harbor
at 675 Sixth Ave. N. The house was constructed by a team effort of
volunteers including the 11-member Xhokli family, who provided
hundreds of hours of "sweat equity." This is the fifth parcel the
city has donated to support the Habitat for Humanity program since
the early 1990s. "The City of Safety Harbor is proud to fulfill the
American dream of the Xhokli family by donating the property on
which their new home now stands," Interim Mayor Andy Steingold said
at the dedication. Since 1985, Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas
County has constructed 133 homes for struggling families in the
county using locally raised funds. Families qualify for the Habitat
for Pinellas program by demonstrating the need for adequate
shelter, ability to pay back a zero-interest loan and the
willingness to provide at least 400-500 "sweat equity"
hours.
