Pet ownership has been known to benefit
the overall health of humans. Lower blood pressure, accelerated
physical healing, and anxiety reduction are just a few of the
health benefits pet owners enjoy. Of course, the greatest
benefit is a life of love and compassion owners feel toward their
newly adopted best friend.
"There are countless studies that
irrefutably demonstrate that when we share our lives with pets, we
live longer and healthier," said Beth Lockwood, CVT and executive
director of the SPCA Tampa Bay. "Our animals, especially adopted
animals remind us of what it is to be alive."
One study by the U.S. Department of
Health concluded that pets increased the survival rate of heart
attack victims. The study revealed that 28 percent of heart
patients with pets survived serious heart attacks, compared to only
6 percent of heart patients without pets.
Currently hundreds of pets are
searching for loving homes at the SPCA Tampa Bay. These dogs, cats,
puppies, kittens, rabbits, and pocket pets are just waiting to make
their new owners' lives happier, healthier and longer.
